  • Hard News: They can see your house from here,

I wonder if Frank Sargeson might have spotted you?

AHA! So you put your feet in the boots and THEN put them in the cowpat. Now that does make sense.

  • Hard News: They can see your house from here,

When we spoke to Google about this yesterday, they showed us some whimsical pictures of Streetview cars (nothing exciting - Holden Astras with a funky roof rack), in places like the middle of south island farmland with snowy peaks in the background.

Must be an interesting job driving those cars. Do you just keep turning left like a naive maze-solving algorithm? And I wonder if driving down endless country roads on the Canterbury Plains is better or worse than driving every road in Glenfield?

  • Island Life: Key and the 'nesians,

There was a bit of interesting "Yes We Can" commentary about FttH on TV3 this morning.

Or perhaps is it was more "Yes We Should"?

  • Island Life: Key and the 'nesians,

We've actually had two wars this decade but unfortunately they've been the wrong sort of wars

I did wonder about that. But I really can't see that the US spending more money on up-armoured Humvees and decent body armour would help the situation?

...the Auckland City Council is actively fulfilling its promise not to upgrade footpaths...

Excellent! So I can have fibre to the doorstep, but the council won't repair the footpath after Telecom dig it up?

  • Hard News: Congratulations, Mr Key,

Listen, it's mid-morning already and I can't see any sign of contractors laying fibre up my driveway.

    What gives National?

  • Busytown: I believe in miracles,

McCain's concession speech was a good start, a decent if belated attempt to soothe his riled-up base and forestall a rash of cross-burnings.

I can't help but worry about the backlash. A large proportion of the 49% are probably feeling pretty aggrieved. When you factor in that almost one quarter of previous presidents have had attempts (successful or otherwise) on their lives, it gives me serious jitters.

Having said that, I think Obama's approach to them was brilliant.

I may not have won your vote tonight, but I hear your voices. I need your help. And I will be your president, too

That last sentence, if you read it in an authoritarian way, is brilliant. I read it as: "You live in this nation, you obey the laws, you acknowledge the process, so you *will* respect my authority!!"

  • Hard News: Proud Wednesday,

Absolutely brilliant. A fantastic resource that I'll be pointing my Social Studies teaching wife at for sure.

  • Hard News: Now It's On,

I am bubbling with irrational hope that the new election spending laws will somehow curb the proliferation of hoardings.

Seriously, the way those warty assemblages of 2x4 and posterboard spring up like mushrooms scares and offends me every election season.

  • Indiana Jonesing,

So what is the overal outcome? A differential of +15 or 20 odd delegates for Obama?

SURELY HRC has no choice but to concede based on that? Assuming she comes out barely ahead in Indiana she could even claim she's goint out "on a high"!

  • Hard News: New on the Street,

Damn uppity Point Chevalierians. Are there any plans on the cards for the similarly peninsulared Te Atatu?

I'm maxing out at about 2.5Mbps, which was previously considered to be perfectly adequate for ADSL. Also somewhat dejectedly discovered a Telecom cabinet about 200 metres further downstream (towards the end of the peninsula) from our house, so the likelyhood of further cabnetisation of Te Atatu Peninsula seem small.

Or perhaps after ADSL2 I can start a Te Atatu broadband association and complain about our measly 2Mbps.
