  • Hard News: Onwards and upwards,

Oh crap. Apparently I have come across all troll-ey towards Westies. Some of my best friends are westies...

Actually, I was brought up in South Auckland, so I'm not claiming to be a born-and-bred westie, but I live in Te Atatu (Peninsula), and am planning to buy tickets for next weekend's home game against the Rabbitohs.

And as a software guy, I prefer Recursive Douche.

Is normal even something worth aspiring to anymore?

Yes, this is what I was hinting at. "Normal" for cultured lefties is suburbs away from "normal" for league-obsessed westies.

I only watch the bit with the brilliant gadget guy. Cos he's awesome.

Ignoring the nepotism for a moment (but I always love a good nep!), I get more comments about Paul's interruptions and strange comments than I do about the actual gadgets.

He's a fairly normal guy in person (for a given range of "normal"), but I do get the impression that you need a particular personality type to be a "light entertainment" host in this country

  • Hard News: After the Charter,

Luke: the DSi is available on the 2nd of April. I'm not much of a portable gamer, but it is a fun little console. I think the tweenie girl market is well catered for with the music and crazy photos.

Russell: Leo was brilliant, basically took the questions out of my mouth. I was keen to know if the Nintendo App Store would be lassez-faire (highly unlikely given Nintendo's history).

  • Hard News: Siren song,

Russell, seriously, a clean install of Windows 7 Beta is your best bet. Vista is poos (http://xkcd.com/528/), and this is coming from a hardened Microsoft user and developer.

There are rumours of a free Win7 upgrade for Vista users, but in any case it would be worth your while purchasing 7 when it is out just to get away from the Vista pain.

...and it was me that got harassed by the dog. I remember it vividly. A standoff of sorts with a growling but otherwise nondescript black mutt, labrador-sized. I learnt later that her drooping nipples were an indicaton that she was a new mother of several pups.

She stood and growled, and I - being from a dog-owning family - approached carefully, paper in hand, astride my bike, shuffling towards the letterbox she was guarding. She shambled up to me, and promptly bit me on the ankle, almost sheepishly, leaving nothing more than a graze caused by me pulling my foot away rapidly.

Of course the shock caused me to fall over, run away, and start bawling my (guessing) 10 or 12 year-old eyes out. Cue several neighbours, and one apologetic dog-owner explaining the situation: that she was just defending her pups. I handed him his paper, and someone helped me deliver the next few houses, then I was on my way, finishing my round.

How different would it be today? Front-page news in the Courier? SMALL BOY BITTEN BY VICIOUS DOG!

  • Hard News: The Casino,

I once put $2 into a 20c pokie machine in my one and only visit to Sky City. The thing then flashed the big "9" button at me vigorously, so I dutifully pressed it. Then it spun once said I had 20c left.

All I can deduce is that the "9" meant "HEY GREAT! You can play 9 games instantly, and we'll just skip all the button pressing and screen spinning and take your money. THANKS!"

I was stunned. I thought the whole point was operant conditioning? It's like giving the rat a robot that will press the "food" paddle for it.
