  • Hard News: Narcissists and bullies, in reply to Russell Brown,

But PLEASE don’t listen to it if you’re vulnerable. It’s the most disgusting, inhuman extended act of victim-blaming I’ve ever heard.

Well, I can't say you didn't give fair warning. Fucking hell. I thought very seriously about laying a complaint with the BSA, but I honestly don't think those two mutants or their corporate enablers give a tinker's cuss and, honestly, I don't have the spoons to listen to it again.

This has been doing my head in. Yes, without formal statements from victims it’s difficult to pursue rape charges. But the police have long had more than enough for a warrant – why didn’t they seize phones and computers? As vile as the idea is, it’s highly likely these guys documented their offences on video.

And is it too cynical to suggest that the Police may have been more vigorous in pursuing charges if these mutants were patched (brown) gang members boasting about their latest batch of home-baked P? Or, ghastly as it is to say, if there another high-profile dead child in the mix?

But, hey, let's take this out to the reductio ad absurdum. It's extremely hard to convict high-end tax cheats and fraudsters, because they expend considerable ingenuity on covering their tracks. These investigations and trials tend to be lengthy, complex and eye-wateringly expensive. Just throw it all in the too hard basket, except for the comparatively small number of cases where there's a certainty of conviction? How about child neglect and abuse? Or murders where the perpetrator is an astoundingly bad sport who neglects to do their dirty deed in front of multiple witnesses and leave behind ample, incontrovertible forensic evidence linking them to the crime?

Here’s what makes me so angry about that TV3 piece: the comments of the police. Repeatedly, they say they can’t lay charges because none of the victims has been “brave enough” to come forward. Brave enough.

So much this. The fact that the Police have plenty of “communications staff” none of whom said “JESUS FUCK, SHUTUPSHUTUPSHUTUP!” instantly says a lot, none of it flattering. Rape culture people, it’s a real thing.

And Key just talked about “young women putting themselves in this situation”. I feel sick.

Wendy: I'm with Deborah on this. I've been largely avoiding this story because it's massively triggering and rage-inducing, but from what I saw Key wasn't victim-blaming or slut-shaming but at least acknowledging "this situation" is horrifying for victims.

This guy (discounting the self-puff) seems to have got close to capturing Lou in the last quarter century

FFS, so Stein walked up to Reed - a complete stranger - at a party. He wasn't feeling terribly chatty, and forstalled the conversation brusquely but not (IMO) in a manner that justified a whiny little bitch on a gossip site.

I mean, it wasn't as if we thought Lou Reed would be nice and chatty but he was cold and scary and he hurt our feelings. How could Laurie Anderson put up with that?

Um... obviously well enough to be in an intimate relationship with the man for the best part of fifteen years. Which you weren't, bubelah.

Punks raged against the status quo, but there was nothing in the music of the Beatles to suggest they were remotely interested in bringing down the “system”. The most they did was mock it in a good-natured manner [...]

I could gather plenty of documentary evidence that a non-trivial number of The Beatles' contemporaries thought anything but, if I had even the slightest suspicion du Frense would let that muck with his thesis.

We should all aspire to the Daily Mail trampling on our graves.

I’m pretty sure basically everyone who knew Ralph Miliband might beg to differ.

It’s not like Lou stopped after that. Christ, he put out Lou Reed, Transformer and Berlin inside 24 months. You could have built a legend on any one of them. It did get more patchy from there

Sure. And the latest albums from David Bowie, Elvis Costello & Tom Waits are perfectly cromulent but, let’s be honest, they’re never going to replace Ziggy Stardust, This Year’s Model or Rain Dogs in my affections. I may like my artists young, hungry and terminally, furiously fucked up; but as a human being, I can’t begrudge anyone basically feeling they're doing OK and don't have a lot to prove any more.

Those folk who get sniffy about Shortland Street haven’t watched it for a long, long time.

Guilty as charged, but you know what? Shortland Street isn't really my thing, and that's more than OK. Yes, Russell is quite right: Let's not be naive about commercial imperatives being important. Always have been, always will be. But at least for me, a sign of a healthy culture is when every damn thing isn't expected to even try being all things to all people all the damn time. That's just the road to bland mush that ultimately means nothing to nobody.

  • Hard News: The Future of Television, in reply to Rich Lock,

Viewing figures at time of intial broadcast are arguably now much less of a factor than they once were.

Sure, but there's a number of complicating factors. Hannibal (which Three is showing sometime in the new year) is pulling the kind of ratings for NBC that would usually get an expensive network scripted drama euthanized with extreme prejudice. But it works for the network because it is a co-production, and the way the deal is structured means they're not only kicking in a relatively modest percentage of the budget but the license fee is a lot lower than is the norm for similar shows. (In no small part to co-producer Gaumont International securing very strong foreign sales.)
