  • Random Play: Ring out the old, ring in…,

    Woodville.

The schoolhouse has 4 stainless steel flues arising from the brick stumps of the original chimneys.

My schoolteacher father pushed the cracked brick chimneys down with a manuka clothes prop after damage caused by the 1932 earthquake.

I'm old enough to remember him doing it.

    (Piece of useless information.)

  • Hard News: The Flashing Question Mark,

I don't know its current status, but for many years Alsoft's "DiskWarrior" was highly regarded and well recommended on Apple sites.

Does more things, and better, than Apple's own disk utility.

Use the CD to start up using Diskwarrior's own OS, then you can start to set about seeing whether you have a usable and findable HD.

Agree entirely with other helpful people that your HD should be professionally checked.

Thanks also for the recommendations about Time Machine. Will explore.

  • Hard News: Just Friday,

I've been looking for an excuse to pass on a remedy for getting rid of that awful Telecom advt. that accompanies this blog and its threads. I guess a discussion on hallucinations might be the trigger!

If you are fortunate enough to be using the Firefox browser, go to the Mozzella site, add-ons, and download Flashback 1.5.7

All flash animations are gone -- replaced by an icon which if clicked will bring them back in all their "glory".

As they say in the low-class restaurants, "Enjoy!"

  • Legal Beagle: Threshold,

Looking at what has happened in this election, my preference
    would now be:

Win an electorate -- you're in.

No list MPs until your party has has reached 5% threshold.

Party percentages (5% and over) allocated on a proportional basis among the seats available to make 120. No overhang.

    How bad would that be?

  • Hard News: Prospects,

So strategically, for Labour voters in Epsom, you vote for Richard Worth if you want a Labour Govt.

    On the button, Christopher.

I would like labour to lead the next term, so I'll vote National (Richard Worth) and party vote Green.

Unlikely to work my way but I can't think of anything more intelligent to do in this blue-ribbon electorate.

Rodney and his poisonous crew need shifting ... out.

  • Hard News: History is now,

Obama's speeches are good. But would be even better if he hired the speechwriter who had a part in the last script for McCain.

And finally, McCain embraced Palin. What did that body language tell you?

  • Hard News: Don't bother voting,

In reference to a couple of RB's links today, the WFMU photoshopped Obama/McCain picts are mostly fairly gross, but there is one of McCain sharing a haka with Jonah Lomu and the ABs.

And on the Bloomberg site, does anyone else share my distaste for their universal use of `` for opening quotes, ie ``xxxxxx"

(Or, as a one-time typesetter, am I too precious?)

  • Up Front: I Don't Think it Means What…,

"Can I do you now, sir?"

    "I see NOTHING!"

    "Sorry about that, Chief."

That gives away how old I am. And enables me to talk in code.

  • Hard News: The Mag Trade,

and who would have thought craft might be the new thing in magazines

And who thought there would still be outlets selling knitting wool and clothing patterns?

Thanks RB for the link to Media 7. Enjoyed that. Was interested how much fulsome praise was heaped on Lynda Hallinan, editor of NZ Gardener, and for the weekly email newsletter she produces. I've been a subscriber to it for several months and it is a splendid example of the genre.

Anyone interested can get access to it via a link on the NZ Gardener website.

  • Hard News: Listen to the Music,

You modernist music buffs might find a letter to ed. in NZ Listener, 30/8 to 5/9 amusing.

Roy Montgomery describes his efforts to persuade Sam Hunt NOT to buy a Bob Dylan LP.

"I really can't sell it to you -- why not buy the new John Cale or another copy of Blonde on Blonde; you must have worn out a few copies by now."

You'll probably like the punch line, too.
