Does One News want to send Asians back?

  • Graeme Edgeler,

Okay - is this One News article (their second lead, after Fiji) worse than the concerns Keith raised about Coddington's N+S article?

This is exactly what I hate about TV journalism.

Headline: "Asian community doubles in census"

    Opening paragraph:

"The first results from the 2006 Census reveal New Zealand's population is surging, with the Asian community doubling in the past five years."

    Later explanation:

"The Asian ethnic group had the biggest growth since 2001, up 48.9 % to reach 354,552. The Asian ethnic group now represents 9.2% of those who stated their ethnicity, which is almost half as many again since the last census in 2001.

Racism - if we say double, even though it's a lie - it's news because there are too many Asians?

Or incredible incompetence - 50% increase is double, right?

  • Graeme Edgeler,

    The system works!

The Asian population is now "surging", rather than having doubled.

  • Yamis,

Check again later. The headline will probably read "Census shows surgeon in Asian population".

  • Yamis,

Russell, don't do what Martin Crowe did and try to fiddle one down to 3rd man for his triple hundred and get caught behind.

Slam it straight through the covers!

I'm not sure if I ever played a shot backward of square on the off side that wasn't basically a rank edge. Although I did once play a matching-winning hand of 28 not out that included some brutal hooks and pulls ...
