  • giovanni tiso,

If you're a user of Google Calendar I can heartily recommend adding the FIFA World Cup calendar dates to it.

Thank you for that, sir. *Very* handy.

Never one to pass up an opportunity for self-promotion, but also thinking it might be of genuine interest to fellow buffs, I offer something I wrote this week about my favourite world cup game ever.

TVNZ has a print-friendly schedule (pdf) for ONE & TVNZ 7.

  • Hadyn Green,

Just updated the post. Sky is showing the games on Sky Sport 2 according to the email I just got from them, not Sky Sport 1.

  • BlairMacca,

Its funny with the English, part of me always wants them to do well, but part of me delights when they bungle it all up and go out on penalties. And I also remember how goddamn terrible the English are when they win something.

My earliest memories are of Italia 1990 which was a great tournament, ruined (again) by a dour final with the worst dive, possibly, of all time...

The last world cup final I almost gave up on football. But you kow what? I am back for more

@blairmacca - on the other hand, what about the BEST dive of all time?

That's lovely stuff Gio. Hope you have a few more Cup tales up your sleeve in the coming weeks?

Dudes. Dudes. What about New Order's tune for the 1990 World Cup, "World In Motion"? It's magnificient because it combines house, pop, sports-rap and football chants.

Here's the clip from Top of the Pops, when it had hit #1:

(Man, the '90s seem really old now.)

I don't think so, but perhaps our gracious host could spare a thread about world cups past. One could reminisce about France v. W. Germany 1982, or France v. Brazil 1986, or Cameroon v. England in 1990... there have been some good games.

    (also: thank you!)

Love it. Great stuff PA. Intrigued about Peter's comment regarding the "huge chasm of nothingness" between the end of the World Cup and the start of the Premier League. I'd have thought - presuming he's a West Ham fan as Haydn suggests - there is no such thing. Always something sensational going on at the Boleyn, in more ways than one. It's like a football club for those who like continual upheaval in their lives. As for being "bereft of all hope", won't that come much later in the season? ...

Argentina and Messi to steal the show in SA for me.

Yet very few great finals (1986 probably being the best in my lifetime)

Other great matches: USSR v Belgium 1986. Holland v Argentina and Brazil 1998, and the drama of Eng v W Germany 1990.

Agree with the original post about Spain. Going in as favourites is doing them no favours.

    @Mike H. Brilliant.

When Ron Greenwood sent the team out for the 1964 FA Cup final against Preston North End at Wembley, he simply said to them "play our beautiful football, and try to win fairly". That's all we went, beauty and trophies, not too much to ask...

As for being "bereft of all hope", won't that come much later in the season? ...

Pffft, if that was our lot we'd have some soppy gloriously defeatist anthem that we all sing at matches.

  • Mike Hollywood,

Peter, not wanting to hijack your so-far excellent WC thread, but I have this theory as to why West Ham is the fave "second" team of so many in NZ (I support Celtic, but reserve a bothersome soft spot for the Irons as the only English club I have time for) ... back in the late 70s, early 80s when LWT's Big Match was the only coverage we got, Brian Moore was always so much more animated when commentating on West Ham games, and the quagmire that was Upton Park had an uncanny knack of always producing exciting end-to-end games. That's how I recall it. Then of course, there was Trevor Brooking, Alan Devonshire, and being allowed to stay up late for the first time to watch the '75 Cup win. Great times. Jumpers for goalposts etc blah

  • Mike Hollywood,

I fear that'll only last until I cheer loudly when England get knocked out! Seriously though, there's a lot to love about West Ham and even peripheral things like the "type" of supporter the club attracts (Ray Winstone, Adrian Sherwood anyone ... er, anyone?) have strengthened my resolve to stick with them through the barren years ... these are important things in my somewhat precious and closed wee world. Besides, I've always got Celtic to sate the desire for rather cheaply acquired silverware. Leroy's boots are made of gold.

  • Tamsin6,

I lived round the corner from Upton Park and the Boleyn for one memorable season...West Ham now rumoured to be negotiating for post-Olympic use of the new stadium. Wonder how things will change round Green Street if they do move - will be a huge change in the feel of the place if they do go.

St Pauli are the best team in Europe. Sure, they don't win matches, but neither do New Zealand. They have amazing spirit, and ethos.

(not in English, but you'll get the idea.)

    Speaking of thread hi-jacking...

Has anyone else seen the McDonald's 'we support the World Cup' ad with the three guys on the couch?

It it just me, or are they implying that football fans are gay? The meaningful looks are just a touch brokeback mountain.

  • Nathaniel Wilson,

I don't mean to brag, actually yes I do, so can I just say, watching the world cup in Europe >>>>>>>>> having to wake up early to watch the same games. Especially when the weather's good (as it has been the last few days here anyway), and the beer is oh so cheap and oh so good!

First match? Much better than expected. Here in Bayreuth (northern Bavaria) the crowd of students at the bar I was at were, for the most part, supporting South Africa, but expecting a Mexican win. This meant for a weird vibe in the end, with everyone on the one hand relieved at the draw, but at the same time somewhat gutted that the fairytale upset wasn't quite realised.

I do have a soft spot for World In Motion, but it may as well be this year's English anthem considering the amount of play it's getting here. The Sun have released a sweet, kinda catchy tune... with Terry Venables turning his hand to Elvis.

This thread is great stuff - nice foresight PAS. And, Mike, always happy to share a floor with a Hoops supporter.
