and I thought, “Keep that store open! Cos when we get back (and Auckland is our destination of choice) then we’re going to need Chinese products!”

Oh Chris, you have no cause for concern on that score at all. Chinese supermarkets abound in Auckland.

  • John Armstrong,

And the two cents from Hamilton: Sunday morning Farmers' Market on River Road is by far my favourite food experience around here; lots of samples (I find taking my cute three-year old with me helps in this regard), fantastic free-range sausages etc from the Soggy Bottom Holdings stall and everything else meaty from Wholly Cow. Great Ciabatta from Volare, and a great range of fresh veg / fruit / other tasties. And buskers. Awesome.

On the retail side, Vetro is great for Mediterranean ingredients (great service too) and the Ham East Greengrocers on Grey St makes you want to linger too. I should like Nosh more than I do. It just feels a bit - chainy? Staff going through the motions unlike the Vetro folks who seem happy to stand and compare food stories. The older I get, the more important service becomes.

Our Farro closed, or at least was 'converted' into a Trader Jacks, a couple of weeks ago. The owners issued a hilariously weasly statement which did everything it could to say that Hamiltonians just didn't know about quality food without actually saying that Hamiltonians just didn't know about quality food. Apparently we are instead 'discerning buyers with a keen eye for value' or something.

Next time you cut through Hakanoa on your bike you should treat yourself to a Whoopie Pie and also give the Grey Lynn Butcher a shot sometime, we're spoilt for carnivorous choice in these parts.

Avondale Market is awesome – fresh veg.

The Avondale Markets is being disrupted at present because of the Queensland fruit fly (read major pest to fruit) being discovered in Mt Roskill.Bio Security have been halting local fruit and veg stalls.I imagine May Rd will be effected too. Gotta run or I'd find links for above and below.

We have soo many(of the best) Asian shops on Dominion Rd, we have even got Winnie complaining about too many Asian restaurants. Never mind that there is Thai, Korean, Malaysian, Chinese, Iranian, Singaporean, HongKong, Indian, and yes Macdonalds. KFC, Burgerfuel and King, Hell Pizza, But apparently that's too many Asian.....Jesus Christ on a stick!

If you're a soda stream family, Russell, next time you're in Welly we gotta take you to Six Barrel Soda Co - here's the writeup I did on the 'Ista - you can buy their syrups to take home with you.

Ponsonby And Mt Eden Nosh is also very good,

I hear good things about the Mt Eden one, but I think Nosh Ponsonby is badly let down by its fresh produce, which is expensive, limited in range and sometimes of poor quality. It's partly a function of the limited space available on the site, but it's an issue.

Aucklanders keen for cinnamon bark can get it delivered free – along with everything else you need in the way of Indian comestibles – from spiceneasy.

The butcher at the La Cigale market deserves a shout out - Jamie from Te Kainga Meats. I do like it when a farmer tells you this Saturday’s lamb shoulder last frolicked on the fields on Thursday.

And the Italian signora makes really great mozzarella and ricotta. Different from the Clevedon buffalo. But good.

Altura for coffee beans. Their Supreme is...well...what it says on the bag.

For meat - used to use West Lynn Organic Butchers when we lived there. Now we're out in the sticks, options aren't so great.

We're trying to grow our own veges. Partial success. The snails and caterpillars adored the lettuce.

Have I got a deal for you…just what you need to get about on

Get an xtracycle, you can refit them onto your existing bike.

Here in Wellington, the inverse is happening: Restaurant Associates (catering firm) have bought a fleet (4’s a fleet, right?) of cargo bikes to deliver their food within the central city. Having ridden past them, they look like a very practical solution to the problem of getting food around a small CBD area.

  • Jean Hughes,

and from the South West of Auckland.
Mangere Market on Sat am is good for veges and often fruit but all is seasonal. Strawberry Farm on Kirkbride Rd is fantastic for veges and strawberries in season (last day is this Sunday for this season).
The fish shop in Onehunga Mall is great, fresh and a bit cheaper than elsewhere. The fish stall in Mangere Bridge carpark on Saturday and Sunday is for smoked fish and mussels - export quality at a reasonable price.
The streets around me at present have feijoas and guavas hanging over hedges and fences making walks an even more delight.
Have to travel for bread but Wild wheat anda freezer fixes that.
Other more processed treats - well I take you advice. Oh apart from my own fantastic home chutneys and relishes and sauces. Library has recipes, above have the produce.

  • Graham Dunster,

Grey Lynn Farro's yogurt selection is dismal, the best one around that I've seen is Victoria Park's New World - overwhelming. And a real shame that Cyclops have changed their range, I was a sucker for the 250g Chocolate topped organic yogurt pottles.

I'd pick West Lynn Organic Meats over the Westmere Butchery every time, better quality, especially in the chicken department (I'm scared of all those antibiotics and hormones in non organic chicken products).

I forgot to mention the strawberry farm - in summer, because it's just up the road from where I work, their strawberry yoghurt cones mmmmmm. And if you're so inclined, they do pancakes.

  • Kate Hannah,

    St Heliers/Eastern suburbs-centric:
    Fruit and veges:
delivered on a Tuesday from https://foodbox.co.nz/ - I've been getting this for over three years now and the goods are seasonal, handpicked, excitihng - we've tried all sorts of new things - and make my life easier. Then we pick up extras from the lovely man from out west who parks his van on Shore Road - beautiful Albany grapes, walnuts, best strawberries in season.
    Supermarket:
Done online (you can sense a theme) and delivered by the lovely Countdown courier driver who has been delivering my groceries since we moved to Auckland 7 years ago. He brings them right in and puts them on the bench for me. Also, his backing skills are legendary. This for all the usual boring stuff like loo paper.
    Meat:
Mad Butcher Glen Innes/Nosh Glen Innes/St Heliers Butchers. I know people deride the MB but the people who work here are lovely, and they text me their good deals on a Thursday. I find the meat to be good quality too. Nosh has a great range, and some very good deals - frozen free range chooks were $6.99 for a while - I stocked up.
    Fish:
the Fishmonger in St Heliers (good but expensive) or the fish shop in GI (good and cheap)
    Deli/speciality items:
Nosh GI, Chinatown Pakuranga, La Cigale Market, Huckleberry Farms GI, Martha's Backyard - for peanut butter m and ms and kosher salt.
    Coffee:
Village Co-op in St Heliers - who also do gorgeous gelato without the Mission Bay subsidy.
    Friday night faves:
New Flavour, Sal's or Kohi Fresh Fish Supplies.

Basically I love cooking and shopping for food, but work fulltime and have family to feed on boring day-to-day basis. Hence food is organised so the basics are delivered and thus I can wander happily when I have time to pick up the little treats.

  • Hebe, in reply to Stephen Judd,

Welcome Stephen. Most of my foraging places have gone or changed; so I'm making it up as I go along. My favourite supermarket was St Martins New World in Wilsons Road, as much for the village square-ness of the place as the goodness of the supermarket. That has gone but the new supermarket is rising as we speak and should be open in the spring.

Piko in Stanmore Road for wholefoods, Opawa Organics in Beckenham for same plus excellent organic veges and fruit at good prices and Retro Organics milk.

Opawa St Martins /Farmers Market on Sunday morning (pricey but good); Riccarton House market for gourmet. Riccarton Racecourse Sunday market for budget.

Holy Smoke bacon, cheese and salmon. The smokehouse, restaurant and deli is in Ferry Road but you can buy their products elsewhere.

Breads of Europe factory shop in Garlands Road for the linseed loaf and yoghurt loaf -- and they sell Holy Smoke bacon, Pics Peanut Butter (wondrous) and other bits and pieces in the small deli.

Reasonable sushi at South City, and another ok New World.
    For starters....

There are no hormones used in New Zealand chicken. Factory chicken will almost always have been treated with antibiotics (which promote growth), and some free-range too -- but Westmere declare theirs is antibiotic free. I do find $25 for an actual organic chook a bit steep most days.
