Dunne is a nong. He has had ample opportunity to speak up in defence of TVNZ7 long before now but hasn't.

No shit, Sherlock...
-
Jos,
Nong is a good word!

I took the trouble of watching episode 1 of The GC on demand... if it's anything to go by, I nearly had a shoot-the-TV moment only a few minutes in.

Anyone here watched 'housos'? It's an SBS mocku-reality series about people living in govt housing, featuring 'kev the maori' and his wife. Funny. But might put you off visiting Oz altogether :)

Damn right. A caculating nong. Speaking up when it is too late, as always.

Damn right
Yous are not wrong. After the token huffing, a reprise of the 2005 post-election hissy fit.

I watched the 30-second GC trailer, having no knowledge of it until I read your inviting post. Unfortunately it seems it takes place inside the life of my stepson, a 23-year-old who resides on the Gold Coast. The characters even look like he and his friends. I can't go there.

Don't frighten the paycheque eh?

another insult to intelligence...
The Press have tossed another editorial to the congenital idiot they must keep locked up nearby for generating tripe on demand - this time on TVN7's demise...TVNZ7 was always something of an anomalous relic in broadcasting. It was established by TVNZ to run "public service" programmes, which generally means worthy programming which only a few people want to watch. In this context it turned out to mean a mildly liberal agenda of plenty of stuff about novelists, sculptors, painters and the like, some routine Leftish navel-gazing about the media and formless chit-chat on politics, and nothing to speak of on, for instance, finance, business or singing the virtues of, or even explaining, the economic system that dominates so much political discourse nowadays.
I don't think they were regular viewers...
Their conclusion:If public-service programmes are worth making, NZ on Air is there to see they get made. Once that is done, programme makers will find no shortage of outlets on which they can be shown.
Oh, well thats all right then....
-
Gawd, that was a shocker orright. Singing the virtues of our current economic system must have taken all the rational and melodic energy that writer had to spare, leaving nothing but the tide-swept debris of prejudice and spite :)

Some gems from the Press comments already, including this from tv producer Phil Wallington:
This editorial is pure tosh. The logic is missing totally and the writer does not understand the funding mechanism of NZOA. Commercial broadcasters decide what "rates" and ignore everything else as "Worthwhile" or worthy" which are perjorative words in commercial TV circles.
The result is we have a parade of freak shows where grotesquely fat people fart and wet their pants in prime time, snarky chefs bully hapless amateur cooks and a gang of Maori boozers and rooters on the Gold Coast demonstrate their bad behaviour and moronic culture.
Keeping the audience dumbed down is part of the process of disempowering citizens and turning them into consumers. That's what this government wants.

Perhaps not the place to post it exactly, but Philip Matthews (bless you, mate!) takes a good hard look at what's happening at the University of Canterbury.

Jos,
It's all good, Mr Ed is on Maori TV as I type, wonderful stuff!

'Fears ‘The GC’ will put Kiwis off visiting the Gold Coast'
The party scene that takes up the second half of the first episode is the opposite of my idea of a good party, I'll give you that.

What the fuck does the editorial writer want anyway, News of the World with pictures?
-
Geoff Lealand, in reply to
Yes, it is a damn fine example of investigative journalism and Philip deserves heaps of praise for it. The University of Canterbury is now employing grad students to ring up its alumni to beg for money; I informed the last caller that they wouldn't have a cent from me whilst they were considering cutting the American Studies programme; the subject area that set me off on my subsequent career,

An off topic 'Howl at the Moon!'
Is it just me? Am I just an old curmudgeon?
But the BNZ's 'Closed for Good' promotion seems to be unnecessarily punitive on their customers - not everyone has ATM cards or internet banking, I needed to make a cash withdrawal today - no BNZ banks open anywhere useful in Chchch. I also understand most benefits went in last night so many beneficiaries might not be able to go make cash withdrawals (or deposit money for that matter) - They're a bank for gawd's sake.
If they want to do "good" in the community using their staff, do it on a Saturday or Sunday and pay them extra rather than withhold their services from their customers, or just have a skeleton staff and still provide services to their customers...
Grrrr. Bah. Humbug!I'm changing to KiwiBank...
