  • Jake Pollock,

Is it defamation to call him a douchebag?

Might depend on the type of douchebag.

  • robbery,

I’m struggling to work out the relevance of viewing the stairs. What next?

if you follow the thread it relates to this story from the herald which quotes an unnamed source as saying Veitch threw Dunne-Powell down the stairs and left her there for about 6 hours.

My comment was in regard to the vagueness of what the Herald passes off as news, what we as the public are willing to accept as fact (it may or may not be fact but how would we know) and trial by media which is apparently ok until an actual trial by court occurs.

Russell thought I was having a go at him for posting the article link, I wasn't. this is the same herald that printed the holmes interview. surely we're on the same page in our dislike of that paper.

There are now 3 detectives on Veitch's case. That should have been the case a year ago when Dunne-Powell first approached the police, when she mentioned wheel chair, back injuries and 'I was attacked" in the same sentence.
It should have been the case when hospital staff treated Dunne-Powell for her injuries and asked her how it happened.

that a sports reader beat and injured his then partner is an important thing to be outraged about, but crap journalism, continued failings in our health and police systems, the wide spread nature of domestic violence and our inclination to marginalise it as what other people do to other people, and the general media manipulation of this whole thing should also concern the public, points that I felt were worth mentioning before some people made attempts to turn my words into an attempt to apologise for domestic violence, which they clearly are not and have not been.

  • giovanni tiso,

What Perigo, George et al. seem to be perfectly comfortable with, is this most disturbing notion that so long as you're wealthy enough, it's perfectly okay to escape serious criminal charges by throwing a big enough wad of money at your victim. That automatically gives you a right to privacy, and to the presumption that you won't do it again, sorry to have bothered you sir, we'll be on our way.

In an odd, very oblique way, it reminds me of the old immigration requirement that you should be fluent in English in order to be granted residence in New Zealand, unless you were willing to pay ten thousand bucks (or was it twenty?), in which case the state was prepared to take your word for it that you were as fluent as the late G.B. Shaw.

Veitch happens to be a celebrity, as opposed to an investment banker, so he'll have a price to pay even if this thing doesn't go to court. And that's not so bad. But it does make you wonder about all those other cases of domestic violence perpretrated by men of means, and it's a most uncomfortable thought.

  • Paul Rowe,

He characterises the assault as a "contretemps", speculates baselessly about provocation on the victim's part, blames the media, suggests that the victim should have been investigated for blackmail -- and winds up his column with a weirdly inappropriate biblical metaphor.

My source at the venerable law firm of Sue, Grabbitt and Runne tells me that there's a very angry douchebag who's going to take you to the cleaners for the grotesque libel. And I've no sympathy for you. :)

He characterises the assault as a "contretemps",

Yay. Up (down?) there with the ever nauseating Michael Laws describing the squalid sex-capades of Richards, Schollum and Co. as "mere sensual excesses". A term I'd reserve for eating a whole batch of Dave's Double Chocolate Raspberry Brownies solo, and in one sitting.

  • Sam F,

Can someone please write a letter to the Herald in response to Garth's nauseating column? I would but I've had a letter published within the last month slagging off Mr George, and a repeat so soon would be bad form.

Or am I just playing into his hands as New Zealand's premier IRL troll?

Broadcasters who make you go eeeewwwwwwwwww

    Perigo ………….. cultist
    Laws …………… apologist
Miles Davis …….. he’s on talk sport and thinks the English rugby team just got up to “a bit of fun “ with their recent rape/sex accusations…………… Sexist + pro violence
    Veitch………………. Woman beater

………………. And seeing as lots of people are offering up possible scenario’s of how Veitch broke his partners back may I be the first one to speculate ……………………… that he was trying to help her by kicking her into the recovery position.

It took four kicks to get her there.

  • Bob Munro,

    Gone.

In a statement released this afternoon, Veitch thanked his former employers for their "ongoing support".

"I need to take stock of my life and spend time with my family before I make any decisions about my future. At the time I undertook counselling and am still continuing to do so. It has been a great help. I am extremely grateful for the love and support of my family and friends.

He asked that the confidentiality of the agreement he reached with Dunne-Powell be respected.

"At all times I have been honest with my employers and at all times I have tried to do the right thing for everyone."

He said TVNZ had been his life, but recent media coverage had made it "untenable" for him to continue in his on-air roles.

    This

reads as this in the Herald

There have been a lot of statements made that are untrue which make it untenable now for me to continue in my current roles with TVNZ and the Radio Network.

So the implication is there that some of what is being reported is not true and that that is why he can't go on in his roles. Could he not then speak the truth and keep his positions? The smell just won't go away.

  • webweaver,

    About time.

"At all times I have been honest with my employers and at all times I have tried to do the right thing for everyone."

OK, so in light of what TVNZ bosses have said about who knew what and when, either Veitch or TVNZ are lying. Which is it? Or when Veitch uses the word "honest" does this include him telling a (very) small part of the truth but definitely nowhere near the whole truth? Enquiring minds would like to know.

Enquiring minds would also like to know how the man can possibly say that he's tried to do the right thing for everyone! Good grief! Tony - you did the right thing for YOU. No-one else.

    Grrrrrrrr

He said Veitch had resigned "off his own bat". "I applaud him for that, I think he has done the honourable thing."

How coincidental that Veitch waited until his ex lodged a formal complaint with the police. Honourable my arse.

Quite, Ali. Just been watching Campbell Live. John Campbell nailed Rick Ellis about that during his press conference and then had Bill Ralston agreeing that it simply doesn't add up - and that you would never deploy four senior managers (including head of spin and a lawyer) to a meeting to discuss a "minor fracas".

Will post the link to the footage when it goes up on their site later.

    Giovanni:
As for the idea that good television presenters aren't plentiful because it's harder than it looks... it seems to me there's always the exact same number at any one time, enough to fill the available slots. And honestly they all blend into the same presenter as far as I'm concerned. Their chief instruction seems to be "go and be reasurringly bland".

Looks that way to me too, but thanks to Lindsay Perigo I realise that it's because they all have that vietchian superman factor. His singularly penetrating insight enables him to discern that each one has risen to their station by virtue of being a rare but subtle jewel of nature. Damn me for ever mistaking them for jumped-up bogans.

Perhaps, but I wonder if any organisation that had been through the kind of industrial relations mill TVNZ has been through in recent years wouldn't be inclined to err on the side of over-reaction. I don't know, but who would love to be a fly on Trevor Mallard's office wall the next time he's alone with Rick Ellis and John Anderson. OTOH, am I the only person who thinks Mallard would be wise to step a little carefully himself.

No. Glasshouses and all that. On the gripping hand (that's an obscure sci-fi reference), Mallard's one is perhaps one of those coldframes made out of an old drawer with the bottom knocked out and a window bought from the building recyclers. Breakable nevertheless.

He's already got Rick Ellis if he needs a patsy. He should be right on it, if only for brownie points.

Craig, I agree that explanation makes perfect sense, but it's not what they're saying. Always the lying and covering up that gets folk in trouble.

There's no way of reconciling "minor fracas" with who attended that initial meeting, or with TVNZ's knowledge of the size of the subsequent payout. Campbell did a masterful job of raising that with Ellis, and he had no asnwer to offer for it. It will certainly be interesting to see if anyone changes that.

Deborah, I get it now, but the wiki says it better than me:

Some of the more devoted fans of Niven and Pournelle will sometimes slip into this metaphor in regular speech, often resulting in some confusion for the listener. The abbreviation OTGH, modeled on OTOH, is also used in some SF discussion groups.
