  • Ian Dalziel,

    making numbers work for us…
Now it transpires that Hekia Parata may have been wrong…

Education Minister Hekia Parata has been forced to abandon a claim that National has presided over a 15 per cent increase in teachers – after revelations that Novopay clouded the numbers.
Parata has been quoted for several months saying that, under the present Government, “teacher numbers have gone up by 15 per cent”.
But inquiries by The Dominion Post have shown most of the increase stems from a payroll error.

    Imagine my surprise…

  • Kracklite, in reply to Lucy Telfar Barnard,

The post-war cathedral is pretty cool though.

Coincidentally, the architect of the cathedral, Basil Spence, was brought in to design the Beehive (though the story goes that he did a few drawings and the MoW did most of the work).

I love the way she just wanders around the end of our street as if she owns the place. Happy to interact with people, but not obsequious. Just checking out her domain

    Ummm …. err …. wow …..

It’s all really depressing. Somehow we’ve become a society where it’s OK to bully people into to doing what they passionately believe is wrong. Where bullying is rewarded with power. Where victims are blamed.

I get that people have different ideologies and I get that people genuinely believe that National party policies are the best for the country, but I don’t get them accepting corrupt bullys running their party and the country. Because that has very little to do with enacting National party policy and everything to do with increasing the personal power and wealth of those same corrupt individuals.

  • Alison Cunningham,

Whaledump seems to have been deactivated - it's tough for even a whale sized little fish to swim against the tide of corporate interest.

So I'm now hoping you live in the same St as us. She has a few friends and she does visit them and we are close to Dom rd end so she knows the bank staff ,the fish shop, bottle shop, but she does check out the berms up to the bank. It's quite cute that neighbours drop off bones for her. But I digress.

  • Kumara Republic, in reply to stever@cs.waikato.ac.nz,

I think that we have here the opposite of the “big lie” (of which “someone” once said, if it’s a big enough lie then no one will believe you could have told such an un-truth, and so they’ll believe you)—we have the “big truth"…it’s a big enough truth, and has such implications, so they’ll not believe you.

Somehow it overlaps strongly with "fiddling while Rome burns" territory, where there's a major crisis erupting but everyone's in denial of it. I've found myself using that phrase rather a lot lately.

  • Kumara Republic, in reply to Rich Lock,

Take a crumb of comfort from the Nixon analogies: his approval rating was 60% around the time of Watergate, and it took a long time to make a dent in that, but history has not exactly judged him kindly.

On the other hand, the Internet was still a military research project in the early 1970s, so news didn't travel quite as fast in those days.

Yes we do. Just a bit further down. And the digression is good for my soul at least and others can just skip over it.

  • A S,

Daft question time. Do the documents in the Jordan Williams @whaledump today point to the possibility that policy changes in Cabinet were bought?

  • nzlemming, in reply to A S,

Only if money passed to a person at Cabinet level. If they just paid Slater to pass it on through his channel to Collins, that's "just" lobbying.

But something that should definitely be investigated, no?

  • nzlemming, in reply to A S,

Oh, most definitely and in minute detail. And I'd say that whether it was Collins or Cunliffe under the gun. This just is not the way elected officials should behave.

  • Sofie Bribiesca,

10 motorcycle cops, 6 police cars. 2 white buses with blacked out windows. Lights flashing, traffic stopped, to let this motorcade through Mt Eden Village heading into the city. Does anyone know who is in town? AK town? And would need that much security?
