Looking on the bright side, Christchurch's monstrous Holiday Inn is to be put out of its misery. Along with the doomed Westpac Tower and the Hotel Grand Chancellor, the three biggest architectural boils on the bum of Chchch.
Crusaders supporters may still dress like Freddie Krueger, but the city skyline will no longer be dominated by hideous knockoffs of the mansion from Psycho.

merc,
Here's our man unconcerned, Nat leader style,
But Transport Minister Gerry Brownlee says he is not concerned about what he expects will turn out to be only a short-term movement, and insists the Government is on track to keep the country moving.

I really wonder why Christchurch hasn't a dedicated recovery minister working with the council. CERA appear to be an expensive impediment, hasn't the Ship been quiet. -

Me too, until this unfortunate association.

The heady days of cartoon violence. I once worked on an animated kids' series that had been given The Word about such stuff when the scripts were half-written. It was a major pest to eliminate stray shovels and suchlike that had been strategically placed for a bit of 'harmless' biff - "One must not put a loaded rifle on the stage if no one is thinking of firing it."

It would seem that they've done so only because their legal advice was that they didn't have a case. District Commander Knowles's insistence that everything was done by the book is disturbingly reminiscent of the looters & lightbulbs fiasco:
Knowles was unable to comment on the fact the officers did not identify themselves when challenged by Bennett, as it was "an operational issue" he was not familiar with.
The fact Bennett was taken to the police station wearing only a t-shirt and underpants was "quite unusual", but "sometimes when you're arrested there is no niceties".Elsewhere, Nick Smith appears to slip naturally into the good cop role when responding to the concerned Cantabrians.

merc,
The office's workload had also been increased by about 270 complaints stemming from quake victims' dealings with the Earthquake Commission and Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority.

I do hope some of these demolitions have had fixed timelapse records that may surface someday as a video...

What a good idea (and then we could play them backwards too).

Dotting the tees and crossing the eyes...
I see the City CEO, Tony Marryatt, decided to take a half day off to play golf at some council sponsored event - shame he had to miss a public excluded meeting about "additional governance arrangements for earthquake recovery planning". Which is one I would have thought he should have been at...
But hey, I'm sure one of the other well remunerated senior managers will fill him in... -

At Thursday's Council meeting Aaaron Keown, the Council's very own village idiot on stilts, asked in all seriousness "Do we know if there are any spare sections in Christchurch?"
As someone commented on Facebook ". . . and yet, ask him where to find a hooker and he will give you gps coordinates." -
In case we hadn't noticed the earthquakes are all about the PM, but don't affect him as badly as Pike River does.

In case we hadn't noticed the earthquakes are all about the PM . . .
Human sacrifice, cynically harvested in the quest for political capital. As the Australian poet Les Murray once said, even a crappy old idea like Britannia can look pretty good if you pile up enough dead bodies around it.

Meanwhile, reports of his poll ratings in decline are tucked away in a page 2 sidebar in the Dom.

Cr Keown has had quite an interesting past, that in another person, would add insight to the darker side of life.
Where do I place a bet on future Prison time of current Crs?
Hang on, we're in Christchurch and he's white, and in a position of power.
OK, I'll place a bet on a conviction and HomeD? -
I've got two friends in Bromley Cemetry. Their ceremonies were very similar, sing-a-longs as we fill the grave in, working on a peasant heritage.
I thought maybe one day it would be underwater, never thought of this:
