  • Islander, in reply to Hebe,

I dunno. They have insurance (based on the 2010 QV, paid up to date.) They were orange-zoned, are now redzoned, and are hit by $112,000 possible loss.

They said things significantly ruder and more cutting - trouble is, there dont seem to be ways out (except for paying for demolishment & retaining ownership of the section.) Hugely expensive - except this family member is a building contractor - and does mean a nice wee chunk of riverside/ backing onto avenue land would remain in family hands. It is not a family* home* (tho' a family member occupies it) but a family *house*. I know how very hard that sibiling works & has worked over many years - this red-zone move means a very large chunk of retirement equity has gone.

  • Ian Dalziel, in reply to Hebe,

    crack addiction?

How are you going to mark Feb 22?

I see it falls on a wednesday and as far as I know it isn't a gazetted holiday - so most folk will be at jobs (if they have one) or at school, etc - council in its wisdom holds events at 8am and 12 - 1.30pm with the ill advised awards ceremony at 2pm - Mr Parker expects the community to put on their own localised events, at least some of those are in the evening when more folk may be involved...
Personally I think the families who have losses to commemorate should be left to do it as they wish, rather than gathered up and put on display by a PR-conscious council machine, especially in light of the revelations about the CTV building's collapse and the CCC's shoddy compliance checking processes.
I will not be at any of these events, this ain't over yet...

  • Ian Dalziel,

    Mr Brownlee says...

"... You set out with a budget but you've got to
do what you've got to do."

As he's happy to have a bloody rugby stadium run $5 million over budget, can we hold him to this across the board?

Good points. I don't need manufactured and scripted "closure". I'll do my own, when I'm ready.

Right on. A pox upon the wretched events management culture that fails to recognise what it can't control. Wouldn't surprise me if "Pop-up Commemoration" was kicked around the table before being reluctantly canned.

Joe Wylie and Ian Dalziel, your artistic interpretations of Bobsy Browneye are brilliant. More I say,

Regrettably and for the first time ever I agree with Gerry.

Can't he just do his own job instead of bullying anyone who disagrees with him which I read is one helluva lot of people and can't Lianne be expressing what people are emailing, writing letters and telling her from their personal experiences? Or am I the one with the hole in my head and is the recovery going just dandy and everyone gets an ice cream?

We're pretty bloody fractious down here; and I'm told its part of the usual post-disaster psychological process. The event isn't over though; it's still happening, and GNS said a couple of weeks ago that this could be going for 30 years or so. There's a maelstrom of emotions, everything from a sense of helplessness to anger to impatience to get our lives back together. Families are blowing apart with the stresses.

The politicians are getting the same fall-out in their own selves, and being the target of their voters' ire and trying to deal with many sad cases. Brownlee is bullying off-the-cuff (count to 10 Gerry), Dalziel is trying to help while politicking, Parker is defending his patch, others are raising their profiles off the back of disaster, Sutton seems to have been swallowed by Cera.

What am I trying to communicate? Confusion, lack of unity among our rulers (of all political persuasions), and so many things in people's lives stalled and meanwhile the 12-month insurance deadline hangs over heads, a fiscal hammer waiting to strike. Rents are being auctioned to the highest bidder, and people I know -- rebuilds of destroyed houses on green zone land -- are being told by their insurers that nothing will happen for at least a couple of years. Not many ice-creams I can see, and at five bucks a pop for the Gerry's Container Mall cones I can't be buying them for the family.

Here, just in: Merivale Mall suddenly closes 20 shops (including supermarket)

Watching Parliament this week Gerry looked relaxed and Lianne looked like she had lost hair.
I see it as (because Gerry is in charge) there were many things like deadlines that were not necessary for everyone, and he could have been more considerate and informative. I see Lianne should be in the face of what are the problems and be all over it possibly positioning herself to try do better if wanted because of all the difficulties you guys have faced from day one when she was amongst freaking out also.I see she is complaining in Parliament on behalf of all the people and if that is politiking, and unwanted ,then who are you going to call? If nothing else she is earning her paycheck. Do you trust Parker ,do you trust this government. Beck asked for peoples faith. People listened because he went out and helped the helpless and even I learnt who he was and the people voted. That is great . He seems genuine. But come next election, will he be politiking or positioning himself for Mayor or not ?
Whatever it is I would still expect Lianne Dalziel to earn her paycheck. That is her job.
Not wanting to push frayed buttons Hebe, just cant trust any word that comes out of Brownlees mouth/mayaswellbe arse. :)

  • Rob Stowell, in reply to Sofie Bribiesca,

I think I’m with most of you regarding the public commemorations. Took the family sailing for the March 22nd one, and had a lovely day. It’s does need some public marking. But not a clown-show; if we had a leader with mana I might even want to attend.
Yeah, we’re somewhere muddling about in the middle of a long messy business. And maybe the mood has turned, from the thankful-to-authority post-traumatic reaction to distemper and unease. I gather the DHB is preparing for a tough winter.
22nd will be just another day at work for most of us, I think.
And I don’t really watch TV, so I guess I’ll have to order a DVD of “When a City Falls”. Available on the 23rd, I gather!
    {eta- oops- meant to reply to Hebe :) be good to meet some chch pas folks one day}

I like your way of expressing it; muddling about is perfect.

It would good to have southpas convene somewhere sometime.

What was the March 22 commemoration? I don't remember that.

I think March 22 or thereabouts was a big memorial Hagley park to mark one month on. Some folks found it useful; some didn’t. We enjoyed the day on the water.

Investors eyeing up those tasty Council assets.

Brownlee must think we are idiots. He’s not pressuring CCC to sell anything- that’s for CCC to decide. Just that CCC’s plan had to be “a lot better than `we’re just going to put up the rates and we’re going to borrow a lot more money’”. He says- find a billion dollars, fast. We're not helping- we've done enough. Forget about raising rates or borrowing it. Forget I’m a senior minister in a govt that believes in selling off profitable publicly owned assets. No, this isn't a gun at your head. It’s ahm, your choice.
Christchurch has done well in retaining core assets, compared with Auckland and Wellington- port, airport, power company. Now the ‘investors’ (read: wealthy who see a chance to get wealthier) are licking their lips?
Disaster capitalism at its most naked and unashamed. “Loot” a light-bulb fitting, and you end up in jail for days and weeks. Loot a power company or two, and you’ll probably get a knighthood.
