  • giovanni tiso,

Wellingtonians, new instructions: stop donating previously asked for stuff to the Women's Refuge, they have been flooded with donations (yay!). Now they need petrol vouchers, phone recharge cards, cash. Can never go wrong by giving money.

(This information applies only to Wellington.)

  • Rob Hosking,

    Matthew 7:26

"And every one who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house upon the sand; and the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell; and great was the fall of it."

    Spooky.

Indeed. And if it's given to the Sallies or Red Cross it'll end up in the right hands at the right time. NZRC is promising 100% pass-through of donations, so none of the money will be spent on ordinary operating costs or the operating costs of the appeal. It all goes to their relief aid costs.

  • giovanni tiso,

Yes. For a number of reasons it's still worth supporting Women's Refuge specifically however. Without prejudice to those worthy others.

Was trying to avoid anger as an emotion right now, but that link pretty much did it. I should have heeded the advice above and ignored it. Ugly, ugly, hatefulness.

    Go away.

brilliant! Is this common for disaster relief? I wonder if Red Cross can do the same thing internationally....

  • Matthew Poole, in reply to Shayne Stuchbery,

It's not common, and NZRC is lucky that it's got sufficient regular annual funding and operating income to be able to achieve 100% pass-through for special appeals. Not many other national Red Cross societies can do it, and I don't think too many other NZ charities can do it either.
If NZRC has an appeal that states to the effect that all proceeds will go to xyz cause (in the case of CHC it says they'll go to the costs of providing relief, including transport and delivery costs), that's the sign that it's 100% pass-through.

Right then. We will likely send Koha to family in NZ in that case - they can donate it there.

I am rationing things like showers because of not wanting to put water into the waste system,

Can I just point out how wise this is - wastewater staff from around the country have been in ChCh since yesterday and have portable emergency treatment plants, but those are not built for significant capacity so keeping any water you are able to use out of the pipes would be very handy...

For sure, and of course the pipes themselves are probably so beaten up (heard from an infrastructure guy yesterday who was saying the nature of the movement this time did really big damage to all the underground services - can't recall if it was horizontal or vertical movement or what) that whatever is going down there may not even be reaching those plants and could come out somewhere you don't want it to...

And hey, one day you'll (hopefully) be able to use dem lemons for a damn fine G&T.

I went down and had a chat to the receptionist before buying stuff to doublecheck what was needed or not needed and they said cash is the best. Saved me a trip through the checkout.

IIRC Bob Parker said yesterday that only 5 of the sewage pumping stations were working. Normally they have 91.

  • Mikaere Curtis,

If you like RPGs, you can donate to the Red Cross and download a bunch of RPGs (plus a couple of larps) in one go. My understanding is that the game publishers have provided free games and that the money (USD20.00) goes straight to the NZRC.

you know, this yet again reinforces my opinion that some people just need that haters lens to help them understand traumatic events?

the chicken/egg question is whether adopting the lens makes them arseholes, or vice versa?

Sure is, I hadn't realised just how big the CTV building was - from the "after" images I somehow had the impression that it was some tall, slim tower. Then I saw "before" footage last night and realised it was actually quite a large square building. Ignoring the high estimates, even the "low" estimates of the number of people still in there (high 60s) is very distressing.
Best of luck (what little good that can do) to all involved there
