He's a streetfighter, Bevan Docherty, he's a warrior, he knows how to go into the deep dark place.

Which part of the TVNZ messageboard is carrying the (shocking) debate regarding Toni Street's "black men" gaffe?

  • LegBreak,

Good commitment from those of you who managed to navigate around that TVNZ comments page.

I mean: “You did great in the olympics you must be so proud of your self for winning a gold medal we feel proud of you too.”

And that’s one of the better ones.

And then I scrolled down the page to see a spectacularly cheesy mug-shot of Macbeth and Quinn…

  • Ted Lebots,

Hi everyone, I too was flabergasted by the comments made by Toni Street when interviewing Hession. I am conducting research at Otago on the pervasive racism in NZ media. I couldn't believe that I was hearing what I thought I was hearing, unfortunately I don't have tivo and I doubt anyone was really taping the 200m qualifiers but if anyone has a copy of this please let me know.

I posted a few comments on the tvone site and stuff.co.nz but I have not seen any stories except this.

    WOW!

Is there any way to get a trasncript from TV one?

You should just be able to ask them for one. Sounds like a good paper

  • Paul Williams,

Ho-freak'n-ray for Nick Willis - I've just seen him get the bronze medal in the 1500. Fantastic. I remember Walker, Quax and Dixon from the '70s, how brilliant to see a kiwi competing in a premier event and doing himself proud! That was worth waiting up for!

Hinton scrapes some large barrels with his Willis article in Stuff today.

Not only racist, but inaccurate on several counts.

    An appalling piece.

  • simon g,

Ha ha, we showed those Africans! Serves them right for not having the cash for boats and bikes! Bloody Ethiopians set on dominating poor little whitey. Haven't they got enough privileges in life already?

(this just in: Ireland beat the All Blacks - a victory for white people everywhere, says Hinton ... or possibly not)

  • Rich Lock,

    This one, I think.

    http://www.stuff.co.nz/4662160a1823.html

    Quote from the article:

"Willis then spoke about being almost a missionary as he represented the "western" world against the might of the African distance runner. The man didn't just win a medal, he gave half the world hope."

Not entirely clear whose words are whose.

  • LegBreak,

    Yup, that’s the one.

It starts off by talking about him taking on the African runners, presumably because the winner came from an Asian country.

Then there’s something along the lines of how he followed in the footsteps of Lovelock, Snell and Walker. What he’s actually done is followed in the footsteps of Davies and Dixon.

Then he talks about Willis’s “Victory Lap” which is an interesting term.

Then the nonsense that RL talks about in regards to giving white people all round the world hope.

Now, I don’t want to belittle Willis’s achievement, but that really is rubbish.

  • Kyle Matthews,

That really does take the bronze glint off his medal win doesn't it. If he really has raced on behalf of the Western World against 'coloured people', I'd much rather he didn't do it in a black singlet.

  • Matthew Littlewood,

That article on Willis was a shocker wasn't it? I like the way it imagines the "non-white" runners as this monolithic entity. It's a real shame, because it was a fantastic race (the 1500m in Olympics usually is), especially from the eventual winner. Sometimes the partinsanship doesn't achieve its dubious aim of inspiring patriotic fervour.

  • Matthew Littlewood,

On another note, the way Willis kicked in the final 200m was superb, he timed it exactly. Who here's been following him enough to know how this matches up to his progress? Has he peaked, or is this merely the start? Sorry to sound naiive, but I don't know much about him other than his achievements at the 2006 Commenwealth Games/this year's Olympics.

    That is a bollocks article.

I heard Willis on the TV this morning, he was thanking god for giving him the bronze medal, going on about how jesus made him faster, etc. So the missionary stuff might've been his words too.

    Great runner though.

  • Matthew Littlewood,

I was a bit disappointed with the interview on TV1 this evening. Whatever you make of his relgious beliefs, etc, he's clearly an articulate guy so it would've been nice if they talked more about his running, training, etc rather than going for the "human interest" angle all the time (though I understand they needed to cover it)
