  • Steve Barnes, in reply to Geoff Lealand,

Oruru. Of course, also the home of the now defunct Swamp Palace. No more films but there is a bloke selling bric-a-brac….People probably still venture down the road as it is still on AA road maps.

Actually, the Swamp Palace is still a going concern. The film buff stuff has gone for a while but they still have dances and music nights. The Council, of course, makes it all hard work sometimes.
I am one of those people that still venture down that road, it’s the only one that takes me home.

I noticed that but no films anymore, since the departure of Richard Weatherly and the more recent, unsuccessful attempt to revive screenings?

We just got back from a winter break in Mexico. This is the lagoon at Sian Ka'an, a wetland reserve.

    Tamarillo in the making.

One thing about the soggy ground, things are growing rather well. This seems to be adding about a foot a week.

Nikau! Barrytown, on the highway to Punakaiki. If they aren't the ones Stanley Palmer painted, they are very like!

  • Lilith __,

Man, I haven’t been to the Coast in a long time. I’ve promised myself a holiday, somewhere, after I’ve found a new place in a flat/new flatmates and moved house! Can’t wait to get out of the city for a bit!

[And if any other PASers are looking to share a house in Chch, particularly in the Southeast, do feel free to get in touch!]

  • Kumara Republic,

Finally back in civilisation again… big prang at a black spot just north of Paraparaumu prompted me to take an alternate route via Akatarawa, if I didn't want to be in for a 2-hour delay. I completely forgot how hairy that can get in wet weather.

I love the Buller district, Lilith! I want to retire there (eventually). Those Nikaus are so special.

Here is one of mine from about 4 yrs ago from a bit further south (near Totara Lagoon). It answers the question "so, does it get a bit windy on the Coast sometimes?"

The Ti tree was wild here yesterday. Lost one crappy one over the driveway. Much of it is on its decline, but that is making way for some very nice Natives and opening up the magnificent view.

    Nikau Pigeon.

Stewart posted a picture very similar to this on our first thread. Decided not to do the snap at the time, so I could save it for now, obviously. ;-)

Sometimes you're the pigeon, sometimes the nikau, to coin a phrase.

When I was a kid my Mum took me on protests to save what’s now Paparoa National Park. I had the t-shirt! So hard to believe that area was going to be clearfelled.

This patch of forest is hanging onto a cliff over the Pororari River, near Cave Creek.
