Many of you will recognise Joe Wylie as a member of the discussion comunity here. Some of you will know of his work as an artist and animator, including the 'Bride of Frankenstein' video for Toy Love. Very few of you will have seen Te Rerenga Wairua, his 1984 short film.
I've only seen it once before myself, back in the day. But it made enough of an impression that I asked some time ago if it could be located and licensed to play at NZ On Screen. I'm delighted to say that with the assistance of the New Zealand Film Commission, it has been published to NZ On Screen today.
The film follows the soul of a young man -- I'm assuming it's a young man -- as it makes its way to Cape Reinga (Te Rerenga Wairua) after he is killed in a car accident, there to depart for Hawaiki-Nui.
Chris Knox provides spooky soundtrack music and the film concludes with the best use of The Clean's 'Point That Thing Somewhere Else', ever.
Hopefully Joe will be able to join the discussion and tell us some more about how the film was made. But for now, watch this:
