  • Polity: Father of the Bride,

A lovely and touching post Rob. Good reminder of what is really important.

  • Polity: A hazy, intriguing crystal ball,

Rob you're putting hope in the fact that iPredict is forecasting National will get 42% in 2017,in two years time.

At 5pm the day before the 2014 election they were predicting National to get 44% (got 47%) and Labour/Greens/Mana to get 43%.

The 1% gap turned out to be a 10% gap.

I think there is a fair chance Winston will hold the balance of power. If so, I hope he will go with Labour/Greens.

  • Hard News: A call from Curia,

If the poll is on behalf of a political party, they supply names and numbers, which are cross-matched from the electoral roll to the white pages. Sometimes they may have numbers from other sources such as if you have supplied it on a survey.

I'm glad the caller was polite and patient.

  • OnPoint: The Source,

Did Ira suggest a specific amount or range to MSD, as a "reward"?

  • OnPoint: Association of Community…,

    Good story Keith.

Since I started to receive press releases direct from PR companies a couple of years ago I've been amazed at how many of them end up in print, but more disturbingly how high the proportion of stories are that are PR-generated rather than research generated.

Russell: My point is that if Minister and MPs say things in stupid ways, they will get criticised for it. If they say them in intelligent ways they will not.

Annette's comment was incredibly stupid for someone of her experience.

As I said at the time, a smart Minister can refer to stuff such as seasonal variations. But Annette King did a blunder probably as bad as Melissa Lee's in pushing a possible linkage too far. Annette actually said:

"They are not easy to address issues unless we ban Christmas and January." And she says this at he scene of a gang shooting!

And bringing the full moon into it was just bizarre. Annette's defence was it was something the Police told her - just as that was Melissa's defence to her stupid crime linkage. The difference is Annette was not a brand new MP, but a vastly experienced Minister.

I pinged both Annette for her stupid comments, and Melissa when she did the same. They both repeated something a Police officer had said, without applying common sense.

  • Hard News: The Honours,

Actually it was National under Jim Bolger that ditched that MBEs and replaced them with MNZMs etc.

All Labour did was change the top two classes of the NZ Order of Merit from titular to non titular - which was reversed this year.
