  • Southerly: Everybody Needs Good Neighbours,

It was with some trepidation, therefore, that we moved into our current house, which shares a boundary with six other properties.

Good god man - do you not learn from your past?!?!?!

  • Hard News: Behind the Paywall,

Gotta say, the phrase "Hard News: Behind the Paywall" was momentarily rather worrying.

I'm sure Mr Brown has a mortgage and renovations to pay for just like the rest of us. In these tough times, all income streams need to be maximised.

  • Hard News: Changing the News,

If TV news competing for speed leads to news 'updates' all evening that aren't the same as the six o'clock headlines, that'll be a bonus.

Oh god that really, really irritates me too! On the 6pm'news "a massive fire has broken out in a Penrose factory, and thirteen fire engines are struggling to control the blaze"... to say the same thing again at 7pm, 8pm, 9pm etc is not an update. Once upon a time journalists were wordsmiths who knew the meaning of words and how to use them correctly - an update is when the fire is under control, or extinguished, or spread to two more buildings..... something has to have changed from the last bulletin.

  • Hard News: Party central is hurting my head,

Get the octopus to decide where it goes and be done with it.

If you're nominating Paul the Octopus for Super City Mayor (and perhaps Minister of the World Cup too), I'll happily second that.

  • Hard News: Grade-A lunacy. With your money.,

Makes me wonder why Public Address doesn't have a policy that requires users to obtain written permission (within 1 to 5 working days) before commenting on the System?

Please submit comments in typing, double-spaced on single sided A4 paper. Attach to a bottle of single malt whiskey (min 750ml), and post to R Brown Esq, Private Bag, Point Chevalier. Enclose a stamped, self addressed envelope if you require acknowledgement or a reply.

  • Hard News: Gushing for Auckland,

I was at the Pt Chevalier Community Committee AGM when John Banks spoke, and I left wondering what drugs he was on. For a politician who has served multiple terms in both national and local government, he seemed confused about the responsabilities of each, and was remarkably short of concrete ideas and solutions for our future. His speech was a jumbled collection of sound-bites about improving economic prosperity, greater productivity, law and order, more opportunities... blah, blah, blah.

As for his ridiculous whine about the audience being stacked with Labour party stooges..... I saw one fellow member of the LP there and that was it. You'd think a Mayor visiting one of the wards he represents would be familiar with the general political leanings of the neighbourhood and prepare accordingly. Point Chevalier has been a bunch of lefties at least as far back as when John A Lee lived in the 'hood. That's John A Lee for whom the local pensioner village is named - the pensioner village that John and his mates sold off last time he was Mayor.

  • Hard News: Paul Reynolds: A Contribution,

    He just knew so much.

And had the very rare talent for making very complex matters accessible without crossing the line into patronising dumbing-down for the tech-tard hoi polloi. Reynolds was a "public intellectual" in the very best, non-wanky sense.

Ditto what Craig said. It was always a joy to listen to Paul on the radio - he had the joyous enthusiasm you normally associate with newbies to a field, he had the background knowledge of where the latest exciting developments had come from and how it all worked, and yes, he could dumb it down without sounding like a patronising git.

I never knew of his work with libraries until now, but now I have yet another reason to be grateful to him for all he did.

  • Southerly: The Burglar Files,

Holy Christ - what secondary school did you go to - Borstal?!?! I was so traumatised after reading that I'm too scared to venture out to Kelston to visit my Dad.

When I lived in New Lynn the house was burgled so often AA Insurance threatened to withdraw coverage. The kid next door confirmed our suspicions by being seen at the bus depot wearing some of my flatmate's clothes that had been taken a week earlier.

  • OnPoint: Dear DomPost,

The DomPost should follow the Herald's example and focus on real issues; today's front page story on Air New Zealand re-using plastic cutlery just shook me to the core!!

  • Southerly: The Problem With Religion,

Jesus famously cursing a fig tree (to death)..

A clear case of provocation. That fig tree was totally asking for it.

Well, he can't get away with that excuse any more can he! Guess that shoots down the omnipotent theory....
