  • Hard News: TiVo and some tunes,

    Yes

    Cool, it sounds neato.
If, of course, the bloody aerial network in our building didn't filter out most of the Freeview UHF channels. =|

  • Hard News: TiVo and some tunes,

    From Kerr:

Action could be ramped up over time if the evolving science confirms the likelihood of dangerous warming and lower-cost ways of reducing emissions emerge with advances in technology. Alternatively, it could be ramped down if neither occurs.

So now we know where the Prime Minister is taking his lead from - that was his exact point to Investigate.

  • Hard News: TiVo and some tunes,

You will not be able to fast-forward through the ads in on-demand programmes, but there will be far fewer of them
    ...
There are no buttons to jump either forward or back, just fast-forward and reverse.

So I presume this means you can do the old Sky+ trick of starting watching a standard broadcast program late (by recording it at the start) and fast forward through ads? Just not in the downloaded movies?

TiVo will be looking to cut deals with all local consumer ISPs so that its content will come to you zero-rated, and won't deplete your data cap.

That's good news (and a first for NZ???).
So they're definitely not going down the ISP route that they are in Australia? Whereby they've OEM'd broadband from an ISP and are providing all equipment for free upfront on a 2 year contract at $100/month or so. Unmetered broadband too.

  • Hard News: After the Charter,

Interesting Simon, some of that stuff is what I was partly meaning by being the RIGHT drummer - his work fitted in beautifully to the songs.

I do know a couple of (very very good) drummers who may commit harikiri if you ever find that Bonham quote though =)

  • Hard News: Onwards and upwards,

Regards to Onwards and Upwards, wasn't Backbenches fascinating last night? Jeanette was her usual stoicly accurate self, Dr Cullen managed to keep it pretty factual and good natured and still pop in his old "we did that" sales pitch, Sir Roger just yelled at everyone in the end and Stephen Franks was baseless and offensive.
So not fascinating at all I suppose... =)

  • Hard News: After the Charter,

    Missed the lovely Who discussion:

I'm afraid I would agree with the guy next to you. Someone (don't remember who) once quipped that Ringo wasn't even the best drummer in the Beatles. And how can we ever forgive the execrable "Octopus's Garden?"
His son though did a great job - no, he's no Keith Moon on drums, but then could anyone ever be?

Agree on all that Scott - Ringo was the RIGHT drummer for the Beatles, didn't make him a GREAT drummer.
Zak did a great job but I felt things like Who Am I lacked something of that louche drumming which still managed to drive the song and define it's tempo and feel in the almighty way that Keith did it. Still, bloody good and that may simply have been an artifact of stadium-not-studio sound.

Re Tivo, very interesting. Feels like a smart play for me - it's testing the boundaries of TVNZ's "we're content, not platform" approach but makes sense to be just one player in order to make it happen.
Question - is it Freeview terrestrial? i.e. HD?

  • Hard News: Onwards and upwards,

losing that particular race to Georgina Beyer.

Oh lord did he? Hilarious and well deserved.

I'll be upfront and say I have found Paul Henry pretty damn funny on Breakfast in the past - if abusively useless on any more serious current affairs piece - but that was petty and ridiculous.

What concerned me was Alison Mau blatantly saying "hey if we put awful crap on air then people watch it and we just want people to watch". Wow, duties of the Fourth Estate huh?

  • OnPoint: Being a dick about Earth Hour,

So here's a suggestion for the Earth-Hour-ers and/or the EECA. Run a campaign that says:
"Hey, good on you for doing Earth Hour. And you know what you can do while all your lightbulbs are off for that hour? Switch them over to these CFLs! That way you'll be making it Earth Year and saving yourself a bunch of cash along the way".

Oh wait, that's Nanny State huh? How's about we just subtly gesticulate this in a suggestive manner then?

  • OnPoint: Being a dick about Earth Hour,

So it's a neurological issue, but a different flavour to yours.

And, while I realise it must be awful to suffer through it, quite an interesting one. The fact that those of us "off" the spectrum presumedly receive the sensory information in the same way (there being no difference physically in our sensors) yet somehow ignore the flickering, strobing etc at a neurological level is quite fascinating.

  • OnPoint: Being a dick about Earth Hour,

    No probs Robert

Question - I presume Signature Range bulbs etc are just OEMd out of China or similar? And that Energymad is actually making their own?

Cause if there is affordable OEM dimmable CFLs I'm off to start a business =)
