  • Hard News: Quantum Faster,

Rich, it's, ya know, FIBRE. Just chuck it on a pole and then plug your Sky box into it. Or kettle. The business case is endless.

Also, this *is* a subsidy-based model.

Oh absolutely, I was just talking about the nature/scope/size of those subsidies.

  • Hard News: Quantum Faster,

Interesting on the fibre-PAST-the-home bit. Will be intriguing to see where it actually goes to - will it be like gas pipes where they're in the street and you pay to get them up the drive?
I'd almost prefer that - then subsidise those businesses/people that want to make the connection. Means only those people who want it (with heavy subsidies to make cost little of a factor) have to be connected at Govt cost.

I'm probably 50/50 at the moment that Chorus will be, at least partly, sold down.
    - 50for: An asset management business like that is a whole separate ballgame to the retail focus they now seem to have. Vertical integration is no longer an an argument after op sep. Chorus would be incredibly well setup to win a number of regions given their existing fibre investments if they were freed up to play.
    - 50against: I guess Telecom can get involved while retaining Chorus by setting up JVs for the regional fibre companies and diluting their voting rights

Oh, and it seems that by posting on Kiwiblog for the first time I have entirely bought down their site. Perhaps the lack of "corrupt socialist Liarbour scum media saps" in my post contradicts their comment architecture?

Bloody hell, it has to proceed to make the business case.
Software-as-a-service does and will largely come from offshore (all due respect to Mr Drury), the "weightless economy" is export focussed etc etc.

I'd upgrade the backhaul and international bandwidth first

Isn't this happening with the Kordia pipe though? Given a lot of his case rests on "geographic distance overcome by getting Kiwi businesses virtually at meetings around the world" then that's an absolute essential

Well, they do say greenfield developments and "certain tranches of residential areas" but yes. 2019 before the plan is really rolled out? That seems a loooooooong way away to me, especially in the tech world.

Not to drag up an old thread, and I imagine Russell that you'll blog a new one soon, but the PPP broadband is here (pdf).

As I just said on Kiwiblog, the pressure for Telecom to sell down their Chorus stake must be much stronger now, as retailers are to be barred from having majority control over any regional fibre provider.

Is that Twistori filtered in any way? Or is it a live stream of tweets with those words in them?
Cause if that's unfiltered then my estimation of humanity just notched up a little.

I vote we replace the NYSE street ticker with that...

  • Hard News: Imagining Auckland: no…,

You certainly can share activities to reduce the costs, but how will the people of North Shore, Manukau and Waitakere feel about paying to fix Auckland City's water and wastewater woes once there is s regional water entity?

Of course, Watercare (and it's rates revenue) already covers all of those local councils, it will simply be extending it's asset footprint down to the last mile. And picking up retail-type functions.
