  • Public Address Word of the Year 2008,

Another John Keyism: "fentestic". It's what he uses when he's trying to praise something he doesn't really understand. Like the Kiwis winning the league: that was a fentestic effort.

You may also see this pop up in work emails, spelt "fantastic". Example "I would like to congratulate the team on the fantastic sales results for 2008."

    Fentestic.

Poneke's a bit partial to the purple prose, isn't he?

He's a trained journalist, freed from the shackles of a sub-editing!

  • Charlie Brooker's Screenwipe on…,

Oh brilliant! On problem - the BBC's iPlayer is geofenced to exclude anyone outside the UK. I'll have to see if my friends in England can video it for me.

  • Island Life: Unaccustomed as I am,

Management language is the curse of the modern world.

Front page of today's Dom Post. Our illustrious leader sez:

There will be some new bodies established and there will be some things that are disestablished over the course of the next three years

    Disestablishment is doubleplusungood!

  • Hard News: Congratulations, Mr Key,

Mark, on PA System, links with text are formatted like this (using curved brackets for demonstration):

    ((http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10542617|Click here for awesome article!!!))

    Which looks like this:

And if you just want to paste the URL on its own, PAS will automatically turn it into a clickable link:

    http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10542617

    (st00pid interwebs with their inconsistency!)

This will include the day on which Friends in England would otherwise be sending me the QI Children in Need Special.

Oh! This reminds me - I'd better make sure my FIE send me the beta videotape of this!

  • Hard News: Rethinking the EFA,

It is really unfair that a lot of people voted for WP and he didn't get in because his voters are spread out over the country and not just in Tauranga

Looking back at previous elections, I was surprised to see how many votes NZ First got in previous elections - 17 MPs in 1996!

But NZ First is undeniably on its way down, which I think is just what we'll get with smaller, personality-led parties under MMP.

    1996 - 17 seats, 276,603 party votes (13.35%)
    1999 - 5 seats, 87,926 party votes (4.26%)
    2002 - 13 seats, 210,912 party votes (10.38%)
    2005 - 7 seats, 130,115 party votes (5.72%)
    2008 - 0 seats, 88,072 party votes (4.21%)

  • Island Life: Let's be Frank,

I am really picky about that particular baked good, and they do a very nice one.

I like a good caramel slice. Midnight Espresso in Wellington do a good one (though not as good as the sadly missed ones made by the old management at Sierra Mt Eden).

Worst caramel slice - anything where the "caramel" is actually caramel-flavoured icing. So if Muffin Break can do it well, then ka pai to them.

  • Island Life: Let's be Frank,

Looking at their website, Muffin Break's Wellington area locations are the mall in Paraparaumu, the mall in Johnsonville, the mall in Porirua, the mall in Lower Hutt and that weird empty mall in Upper Hutt.

Evidently there's not much demand in downtown Wellington for mediocre muffins and coffee (or has Starbucks and Gloria Jeans cornered the market?)
