Another dog for the ugly song department:

Worked out very well for him!
And good on him. Still, great sadness ensued when RWP ended, as well as the custom of playing random music clips between TV programs when they were ahead of schedule.

Can we please start a "audio equipment used to record things off the TV and radio" nostalgia thread?
One distinct memory from back then shaped my stance on copyright and music companies back in 1986 :
In 1986 TVNZ took all music shows off the air following a dispute with record companies, who were demanding payment for video clips that were becoming increasingly expensive to produce. TVNZ refused to pay to screen them on the grounds that this was ‘a form of sales promotion’.
What goes around comes around, eh.

Just been flipping through a Peter Gabriel bio. I dislike Phil Collins' music as intensely as the next guy, but - oddly enough - he seems to come across as a pretty decent geezer.
Tony Banks, not so much.
I can't hate Phil Collins too much. He might have ruined Genesis with MOR pop and sold out with twee soundtracks, but in his day he could drum. But greater respect goes to Peter Gabriel. He pushed the Fairlight and tried to remain experimental even with major label expectations leaning on him.
Tony Banks; not a people person, eh.

As for musical educations, Kasem's Top 40 was up there with Ready to Roll and Radio with Pictures (the first show to feature a host with a kiwi accent). As for bad songs by good artists, there was the influential Intruder (Warning: home invasion theme. May be a trigger):
The song gave us the sound of the '80s, the gated reverb drum effect. Gabriel and Collins still haggle over whodunnit.
If you haven't seen it, BBC's Synth Brittania is a trip down electronica memory lane. It's amazing how many Aspies were in the vanguard of synth (where they utterly rip into prog):

Yeah. How can people hate the theme music to nature docos?

Worst McCartney song:
As for prog, one person's bombast is another one's daydream. Depends what you're looking for in music, I suppose.

And a correction to my earlier post, so you can look without hearing:

@Sacha, Kenny G was Hospo Gold at the time. However, many bosses and I disagreed as well. Another day, another round of musical torture:

Celene Dion, Mariah Carey and all those other crooners and warblers set off my tinnitus, but that's more of a daily pain than cruel and ununsual. Room 101 would be a mix-tape of 70's and '80's dreck my parents liked:
Psychological violence like that makes Black Eyed Peas' My Humps almost enjoyable.
