the point of road tolls (if you are committed to ensuring a free alternative) is distortion!
On the contrary, toll roads are user-pays. Abstracting away the cost of road use via borrowing (especially pernicious), taxes and rates creates a distortion. Now, you might argue it's a good distortion, but it's still a distortion.

What is it with kids & McDonalds?
Network effect. Even if you don't go there, some of their little frinds will demand their birthday there and they get hooked.
Also, McDonalds advertise heavily to kids. I'm not at home, so I can't give you the cite, but I can give you the gist of the quote a C*O level McDonalds manager gave a financial paper, which was to specify their goal of having kids eat at least 20 McDonalds meals per month on average...

Raybon Kan wouldn’t be part of the Auckland pseudo-celeb media in-crowd though, would he?
Quite, LegBreak. Or the Old Boys' Club which, as Russell has noted before, sees Paul Holmes (apprently) able to get a major metropolitan daily to basically publish a PR piece at his behest.
Ridge generally comes across as a bit of a dick, but on this particular issue he seems to be the only one prepared to break ranks.

Veitch has had his big public apology and various proxies have popped up to heap scorn on his ex and testify to his character. If we're weighing who has had the most chance to put their side in public, I'd say he's by far had the better of it.
Quite. Especially the way so much o the Auckland media mafia appear to have closed ranks around him. Has anyone other than Matthew Ridge actually expressed anything negative about his admitted behaviour?

and if you don't know, then it's possible you are a party to abuse.
If you drink coffee, there's a good chance you're a party to opression. If you use oil - by eating, driving a car, taking a plane, using the bus - you definitely are.

Racism and religious triumphalism in hyping the bronze. What the fuck have we sent over there to report on the games? Are the NZ press running some sort of "care in the community" program?
Actually, that's unfair. To the intellectually disabled, to whom I apologise unreservedly.

It is one of those relatively rare occasions when I am entirely in agreement with Craig: 'pornography' is sexually explicit material we wish to sigmatise, and 'erotica' is that we approve of.

In 1990, Richard Long became the editor
Ahh, the stories I could tell you. And I wasn't even a journo.
This is the same woman who ran the "the SIS are spying on teh maaaris" story with such gay abandon and never mind the facts.
Was she not also the woman that oversaw the "Labour party are pro-pedophile" around the time of the review of age of consent laws?

I was wondering why so many journalists seem to be scared/bewildered/confused by bloggers and blogging. Because, at its heart, blogging is just writing.
Because most bloggers are doing it for free, on the side of their day job. The reaction is not unlike the reaction of people who make a living out of photography getting pissed off at the number of people happy to give away photography for free. It could well ruin their careers.

But I do think that journalists can become institutionalised in a number of ways.
When I worked for Wellington Newspapers people used to speak approvingly of a since-departed political reporter who'd have himself reassigned to the crime rounds every year or two, to prevent exactly that.
I certainly know that from my interaction with the journos the polticial gallery were the only ones it would be fair to describe as up their own arseholes. Too much time spent segregated from their peers, and too great a sense of self-importance, methings..
