Going down this path one could argue (I don't) that a sporting event might be art even if the actual sports aren't.

    Two words: Professional Wrestling.

Quite apart from anything else, I think this pretty much spells the end of any chance of a Labour government past this election. At this point I suspect the only thing Helen can influence is how badly Labour are fucked in this election and probably the next. One hopes she doesn't go like Jenny Shipley, spreading her legs for anyone who could promise another month, another week, another day in power.

  • Hard News: The Spiral of Events,

"wow, the media has decided it's time to finish Winston Peters."

Winston Peters decided to finish Winston Peters at the time he's alleged to have decided to do exactly the kind of thing he's made hug political capital out of in the past - shady deals with wealthy New Zealand businessmen.

If turned out Fay or Richwhite had dropped a hundred grand on John Key in questionable circumstances and Winnie got wind of it, he'd be riding it to the next election.

(Not, I should add, that I wish to insult Mr Glenn quote that grossly by comparing him to those two scumbags, but you get the idea...)

really hate the term 'the beltway'.

Yup. Fortunately it so often is a reliable marker that it's safe to ignore anything that comes after as being largely worthless.

  • Hard News: Awesome,

Giovanni, James deals in themes rather than facts and has what is best described as selective morality.

But remember, if you try to suggest that detention without trial or torture is always wrong, even when Americans do it, you're a filthy moral relativist.

"You keep using those words, but I do not think you know what they mean."

  • Hard News: National Exuberance,

He genuinely believes that ACT will protect workers rights, the environment, ethical foreign policy, and reduce crime.

I'm fairly sure Roger Douglas did and does believe the same thing, quite sincerely, from my knowledge of the man. As opposed to the "Fuck You I've Got Mine" wing of the party I think of guys like Owen and Franks having epitomised.

but it has always struck me that the free market naturally tends toward monopoly and price fixing, rather than introducing competition, reducing prices etc.

Personally I think it rather depends on what you understand a free market to mean. I think capitalism certainly does (after all, monopolies or price-fixing cartels represent the best return on investment).

A free market, on the other hand, can mean many things to many people. To me I want my free markets accompanied by things like the Consumer Guarantees Act, to help ensure people get more perfect information, for example.
