  • Hard News: Rape and unreason, in reply to Dylan Reeve,

I’m pretty certain that reasonable ideas about consent can be derived from the golden rule…

The trouble with that is if one person wants sex, they may assume the other person does too.
As noted above, many rapists don't think their actions are hurting anyone. They assume they know what someone else wants or likes WITHOUT ASKING.

You know what I hate? The fact that every woman I know has stories of when she was raped/abused, or the times she had a narrow escape from same.

Do you know what it's like to always, always feel fearful when out alone at night, and often in the daytime too, if there aren't many people around? This is what women live with. Is that fair?

it’s also not beneficial to implicitly or explicitly that every man is a likely rapist.

Every adult needs to know what consent is, and how to be sure they have it. Many convicted rapists DON'T know what consent is, or how to ask for it. They think a woman must be consenting because of the way she dressed, where she was, because women always want it, because she's dating them, because women say "no" when they mean "yes", etc., etc.

Men can do a lot to prevent other men from raping in the same way they can stop each other driving drunk. Keep your eyes open, if you see anything which looks dodgy, do something. Check if everybody's OK.

  • Hard News: Rape and unreason,

No one has suggested men be prohibited from parks or streets at night. Wouldn't that also be effective?

    There's Golda Meir's famous observation:

When Israel was experiencing an epidemic of violent rapes and someone at a cabinet meeting suggested women be put under curfew until the rapists were caught, Meir shot back, “Men are committing the rapes. Let them be put under curfew.”

I also suspect he pulled his claim about the rate of rape of tourists here out of his arse along with all his other factoids.

    Factorrhoids. Shitty and irritating.

A chap called Nat Dudley has helpfully rewritten Jones’ column for him.

“They were unlucky to come to a country that believes that women can prevent rape by their actions – by hiding away and by not dressing ‘slutty’. This is shown at the highest level in our judiciary. This is a country that doesn’t seem to want to change. Perhaps we should issue tourists with a pamphlet warning them of that.”

    This.

Pluperfect/ Past Perfect would use the auxiliary ‘had’.

Yes. Looking it up, “has entered”, etc, are present perfect.

I don’t know that there’s anything wrong with using that tense. Except it conveys an awful feeling of endlessly re-living the past. Which is perhaps appropriate.

Amberleigh, your brother sounds so awesome, I'm so sorry for your loss.

I don't know how I would manage without any of my siblings. Losing them would break my whole world.

  • Hard News: Another Saturday Night, in reply to Stephen Judd,

Why in the last few years have police suddenly, inexplicably started putting simple narratives into the perfect tense rather than the simple past? Eg: the suspect has entered the property and then he has broken a window. He has then …

Isn't that the pluperfect? If we're going to be word nerds. ;-)
