  • Hard News: Geekstravaganza,

Anybody else notice that fully 1/4 of the XKCD comic archive consists of "your mother" references somewhat more disturbing than the ones that have exercised discussion here?

On reflection I remembered others, but this was the one popped in my head*

Yeah? Well your MOM turns every conversation into a "your mom" joke and it's unbearable.

    * like your m... Never mind.

John Key still not shutting up. It's been interpreted as trying to build a differentiated brand from Labour, but surely "The guy who wants his own facts" isn't something to try for?

Well, Kiri might not be in the same world as Hayley, but she's on the same album as Elizabeth Marvelly

and then a week later it appeared on 3's evening news.

I don't know what network it came from, or how old it was, but one 3 news story (probably on a Sunday) belonged in the early eighties: apparently, they make a lot of music instruments in China! Especially violins!!!

Medvedev's wikipedia entry has an audio example. I've enjoyed the nat rad man who was using an authentic-sounding level of thickness that meant he had to leave a little pause for his tongue to unwind every time he said it.

I feel I should hark back to some Harry Potter discussion from back in the day. Frustrating though Rowling is - due, if I can put it this way, to lack of quality rather than offesive badness - she does get people reading.

Like a gateway drug, but - assuming you have a problem with drugs and not novels - in a good way.

If your friends like Harry, don't get angry with them. Take it as a sign there are any number of real books they might enjoy.

Incidentally, I was at the operatic (well '__ballet chanté__') Seven Deadly Sins at the festival the other week. Aside from a hugely emotional performance from Gun-Brit Barkman that made the irony of the thing all the more crushing (and I also appreciated the skill of inject the desperation of voice into full-power operatic singing).

I was also deeply charmed by her apparent pleased, appreciative astonishment when we went wild at the end. Admittedly she may also have been taken aback by the way we were whooping and stamping rather than, say, standing, but if there wasn't humility there it was an even better performance than the one she sun.g

It think it was Noelle McC on the National Radio afternoon show that put Hayley and Kiri back to back with their versions of that Songs of the Auvergne song. And while Hayley's version was very pretty, it wasn't much else and for my money it got blown out of the water.

On the other hand, Kiri's been bad at pop for longer than Hayley's been uninspiring at opera. It's a bit like an apple picking a fight with an orange.

On the loudness of trained voices, a story from the 100th anniversary Otago capping show, which the had, I recall, in the Regent Theatre. The Sextet had to explain, firmly and repeatedly, that they did not want to be amplified, and the everyone would be able to hear fine.

I tend to think there's good art and bad art rather than good arts and bad arts. One issue might be that modern popular music tends to be rather ephemeral, so the 1% or whatever that's not crap doesn't go into a box marked 'worthy'. It might be interesting to trace the history of various art forms and genres from popular despisedness through the acceptance of the authorities to bloodlessness.

I feel like the really wild aesthetic experiences in most fields are produced by passions fed through technique. You can get trapped by either, and the degrees of each vary from the dionysiac rock concert to, well, opera.

  • Hard News: The drugs don't (always) work,

    You'd guess that

Sorry, it's just that I indelibly associate "talk therapy" with psychotherapists and "counselling" with "counsellors". I mentioned CBT up-thread a bit but I should have been clearer.

Having been exposed to more of the media coverage, the resident (clinical) psychologist's personal frustration was people describing the recommended alternative as "counselling". John Campbell managed to beat that with "counselling or talk therapy". Both of which I'd guess are less effective than the Prozac.

Honestly. You might as well see a "therapist".

    Placebo party anyone?
