In one of the polite political discussions in our house the other day, I pointed out that one of the reasons that National rejects the Maori seats is that for many, many years they were Labour seats, and under FPP, that was a problem (for National). But rather than seeing that as a problem to do with the seats, National should see it as a problem with their politics and policies. If the nature of National is that a large proportion of Maori reject National, then rather than rejecting Maori, National should take a long hard look at itself, and think about what changes it should be making in order to appeal to a larger proportion of Maori.
Maybe that's what John Key is doing.

There can never be too many pairs of shoes nor too many aquilegias. My favourites, along with irises and roses and herbs. Alas, I have none in my new garden, but I can fix that...
I so hear you about the sadness of leaving gardens. I have done it too often. The one I left in December 2007 was at the stage where I knew it would look beautiful in spring 2008, right about now.

Meh. There have been some full and frank, though usually polite, exchanges of views in this household about the potential worth of the National-led government, but using the 'Minister outside cabinet' device was not one of the points up for discussion. It was unusual last time around, but the device does seem to work. Most of our constitutional and parliamentary arrangements are a matter of convention, built up over time through practice and incremental change. This is just one of those incremental changes.
I don't recall Key campaigning on 'no Ministers outside Cabinet.'
