  • Southerly: Another One for the Kids,

    Critics' report

I have just read it to my daughters. Herewith their comments.

"I liked the bit where they all went, 'Oh Al-__bert__!' "

"I liked it when everyone got cheap fish dinners."

"I like it, but I couldn't figure out whether it was he was a cat or a dog until he jumped into the lake."

  • Southerly: Another One for the Kids,

And it looks like (quite seriously) we're all too sick to have Christmas this year.

Oh no! And sick babies are such pathetic little things. My commiserations to all three of you.

I'll be adding Albert Otter to our night-before-Christmas-reading. Anything to distract les filles from what they are rapidly finding to be the very longest day of the year.

  • Busytown: Flying visit,

Deborah, I knew we were sisters under the skin. Which one is your cuzzie again?

    The gorgeous Carmel.

  • Hard News: The Interesting Party,

I'll add my thankyness to Jackie's thankyness, because she captures exactly what I want to say.

Russell, if you're thinking about enhancements, here's a possibility, and I think it would take nothing more than starting up a thread, or maybe an "in the spotlight". What about a "Births, Deaths, Civil Unions and other items of interest" column. In the olden days, the community that mattered to us would have been our local town, and we would have put those kinds of notices in the local paper. PAS has a bit of that 'local paper' function for us, and there's quite a community that has gathered around it. T'would be nice to have a way of announcing those life events to our community.

  • Current Status: Holidays,

    crazily blooming pohutukawas

Curse you, Danielle. I have tears of homesickness rolling down my face.

Fortunately, we are heading home to the old country a few days after Christmas, for a trek through Auckland, New Plymouth and Wellington. Plus we are spending a few days on my parents' back country "farm" i.e. patch of regenerating native bush with bach, no electricity but plenty of hot water thanks to the wetback on the wood-fired stove, lots of tui and riroriro and kereru, and kahu patrolling the valley and riding the warm air currents higher and higher.

Hmm.... making me feel very jumpy. I think I might spend a few minutes doing a very basic back-up today....

  • Up Front: Absence of Malice,

And "peasant" to "pheasant"? What about "hostage" to "sausage"?

  • Up Front: Absence of Malice,

Not a tech writer! But I do give step-by-step recipe instructions from time to time. I'm particularly proud of my instructions for making mitred corners in the paper lining for sponge roll tins, and my Christmas cake recipe.

Degrees in acountancy, history and philosophy here (greedy over achiever!). Another area for history and philosophy grads is policy and strategic analysis, which can be done on a project or contract basis, should you not wish to answer to the man all the time.

  • Hard News: Essay Question,

As for Gilchrist & Rees, I think it's worth remembering he is 40yrs and she is 22yrs.

    And your point is?

There's a big power dynamic in greater age. I know they're both over the legal age of consent, but even so, a 22 year old usually has far less social and economic power than a 40 year old.
