But what will they get?
About 10 tv channels, plus some radio stations. NZ has a pretty strong market for FTA tv, so I can't see them all disappearing in the next couple of years.

The consequence of rushed, poorly-considered, poorly-debated legislation.
It wouldn't surprise me if parliament in the next month puts through a "Christchurch reconstruction bill" to take over the city council planning process, stream line consents, authorise demolitions etc. The details of that will be quite interesting.
So would reading any reliable history of the untold misery actual Commissars caused during the Russian Civil War and Mr. Stalin’s regime.
The common use of the term as most people would use it - a minister or other head who has significantly more powers and control than would be normal in a democracy - isn't too far off the powers that parliament granted him last year. I can't see anyone around here arguing that he's sending people to gulags, but that's only one meaning of the word.

As if that were not bad enough, those that went out and bought Freeview boxes will soon have no use for the things other than watching the increasingly competitive, commercial driven TVNZ dumbing down our country with more and more “Reality TV” crap and more and more biased “News” coverage.
I'd imagine they'll find them more useful when analogue gets switched off in a few years and the only way they can get TV is through their freeview receiver.

Unfortunately, this week it has been announced (although still no official press release that I can see) the Government won’t be funding TVNZ 7 any more. Shitballs. So I guess that’s probably the end of that. – DC
TVNZ 6 seems to have disappeared off sky. It's got a forward saying that their programmes are now showing on tnvz 7 (sky 77). That seemed to happen awfully fast?

Reading that Peter Hyde piece, it sounds like an urgent investment in door-to-door circulation of clear printed material is warranted – and asking at the same time what each household needs. Then repeating the process regularly.
I remember seeing mention of them doing this on the TV news earlier this week. I can’t remember details, but they definitely said that they’d been maildropping eastern suburbs with information.
Yes. I wonder if somebody can shed any light on the university side of things. Adelaide offered to take Christchurch students yesterday. Had other NZ universities done the same?
The problem here is the cap on student enrolments. Every additional student we take on goes over our cap hence no funding for them apart from their student fees. If the government would allow the caps around the country to float nationwide (so when one student left chch and went to another campus their bit of funding travelled with them) that would make it a lot better – I’m not sure if they’ve decided what to do with that.
There’s a lot of determination to help chch students down here, they’ve even been talking about making Otago an extension of the christchurch campus and hosting lecturers, students, lectures etc en mass, while they’re all still enrolled at canterbury. A volunteer army has formed to support the canterbury volunteer army. They rolled 15,000 prepacked lunches up to Chch on Saturday - all donated non-perishable food - and they're trying to repeat again this weekend.
Is this already happening? Does anyone know?
My step-daughter (more West than East chch) says she had three knocks on the door the other day from people making sure they were OK. Some sort of emergency services checking the house, govt welfare person, and a volunteer asking if they needed anything.

Fear not. Legions of arbitragers will sort it out, driving down to Christchurch to get us our cheaper fuel.
Lol. Ben brought the funny.

And, no, I don’t have any idea what he’s going on about with “tons” and “kilotons”.
I believe that's the amount of the cheese that makes up the moon that is influencing the earth's crust.
I can't get up in arms about JC having the guy on the show. It was already all over social media, discussions at morning teas etc. I've argued with several people over the past few days that the guy is a quack and making money off people's fears.
If what JC was trying to do was to turn the tide by pointing out the bullshit that the guy has been spilling at such a vulnerable time, then, despite the fact that it probably didn't turn out the way they wanted, I'll give them points for trying.

I think you’d have a tough time getting people down here to agree that the Cathedral shouldn’t be rebuilt. It’s sad. We need a symbol of hope. Yes, we also need some kind of monument, but that’s the building that symbolises our city.
I don't know if the Cathedral would be right, or would be offered, but I'd like to see a building become a memorial/museum to what has happened to Christchurch and the eventual rebuilding.Something that had educational/relaxation/historical elements to it.
It won’t be easy. Getting over 50 percent hasn’t happened since 1951.
Easier now. Under FPP every vote actually ended up in the final tally. Under MMP with all the parties that end up under 5% you'd probably only need 45 - 47% to get 50% of parliament

I think I can afford to do both – and as a matter of principle, I don’t claim tax rebates on charitable giving because I tend to donate to organisations I have a personal connection with (like hospices and Women’s Refuge, who’ve been there for women close to me). But that’s just me, no holier-than-thou bullshit being laid on anyone who does.
Wouldn't claiming the tax rebate give you more money in the pocket so you could potentially give more in donations? I've never claimed a rebate but I assume it just reduces your tax to pay for the year.

I thought John Key looked like he was standing in front of a green screen when I saw it on TVNZ. However I think it's very unlikely as that would be the last thing anyone - including the TV crews - would be worrying about. Mostly likely just unusual lighting as Simon points out.
