Not only that, but they weren’t too bothered about fallout from the atmospheric tests they continued to do for 11 years after the US and USSR had stopped.

Those French people had darker skin I believe.

  • Hard News: About Arie,

Sorry Russel, that may be so, but so far, I’ve heard not a peep of follow-up from him and I’m not sure if he really is walking the walk.

I've never heard him renounce that he beats up his "wife" either.

I think you're extending the responsibility of a MP for Central Wellington on events that took place in Christchurch a tad too far, especially when he's made one statement on the matter, which is practically about all he can do.

That, frankly, is a despicable misrepresentation and trivialisation. If Labour does not stand up for habeus corpus, then we all are pawns in their game of power-seeking.

I have no problem with Labour standing up for that and many other things. Just not sure that Labour should decide to make this young man the centre-piece of their campaign without his consent. Someone commented that he'd already decided not to lay an official complaint and presuming that was a free and informed decision on his part, I hope everyone would respect that.

… because otherwise, they’re letting Judith Collins of all people dictate their policy and timing de facto

Arie is now a political pawn for Labour to hit National over the head with? Excellent.

    Harumph. Not “I will…”

Nice job being my electorate representative, Grant. Do you also “truly hope” that I’ll vote for you?

Did you want him to run down to Canterbury and drag a couple of cops before parliament for a special hearing?

Tell that to Geoff Palmer. ;)

Mike Moore is a bit of a lesson for everyone in the Labour party at the moment not to end your parliamentary career by rolling someone just before an election.

But its going to mean a more dificult investigation, and the need for extradition if a case can be made.

It probably removes the primary punishment against a police officer - dismissal. And most likely all the lesser employment punishments. Unless the Australian police body moved against the officer or officers, it really only leaves criminal charges, which are probably more difficult as the standard of proof tends to be higher.

  • Hard News: The digital switch-off,

(I don’t see many Italians copying Kapiti cheeses – odd that)

I know basically nothing about making cheese, but I'm happy to put money on the bit of the process that Italians really outstrip us on is what I'll call "post-cow". Whether that means they're better or worse than us at producing milk ("cow phase") I dunno.

His “Job” is in Christchurch, his office may be in Wellington but when communications are disrupted he should be close to the emergency, within radio range.

I'll disagree with Matthew. There's been a whole system designed to deal with significant disasters such as this, and it's based around a facility under the beehive.

It can be run from elsewhere, but it's run best from Wellington as that's where the staff are that are trained to coordinate it, and where the hardware and communication is specifically set up.

There's very little advantage in taking it to the disaster. It's designed to see the big picture as much as possible, not to get close to the detail. You get too close and you try and help one street, one suburb, you fail everywhere else.

I'm encouraged that the 2nd worst thing to come out of this, after a death toll of 200 people, is not enough toilets to go around. No widespread disease, people not having food, water, violence, looting. Not bad.

  • Hard News: What Now?,

The Herculean, but largely invisible efforts by head office officials have underpinned what has, so far, largely been an effective and well co-ordinated response to getting Christchurch back on its feet.

My brother is a manager in Civil Defence national office, and he's on day 12 now of 12 hours on, 12 hours off shifts working in the bunker. Last September he had the same - a few days after his wife and three daughters under 5 moved into a new house.

Civil Defence along with every other government department had its budget sliced when the current government came into power and I think that while they'll have a few "do better next times" on the record, they seem to have done a pretty good job.
