HSL is a great tool. Because digital images tend to go completely blank in the highlights, I habitually underexpose and then tweak up the shadow areas (in which there is often a surprising amount of information) and then adjust colour and contrast to give a balanced image.

The reason you can use a red light in the darkroom was the film was not sensitive to red light!!!

In fact, you can't even use a safelight dealing with undeveloped film - you have to thread it on to the spool for developing in complete darkness. And although b & w paper isn't very sensitive to red light, if you leave unexposed paper out for an hour under safelight, it will darken.

All part of the excitement of darkroom ritual!

Pored! It's "pore over" not "pour over". Pet peeve.

Rangitoto from a gun emplacement on North Head. A panorama stitched together from pairs of shots – I had to take two shots for each section, one exposed for inside the emplacement and one exposed for the outside light. I then merged each pair to HDR using the same settings. Then merged the resulting images into a panorama. Phew.

I really should look into printing it – the full size image is 10,966 x 4223 pixels.

Wow! It's beautiful. Love the icy ones too.

I think this is a lesser crime than that of Nick Smith pressuring ACC over Bronwyn Pullar.

Just to repeat, Brown is not known to have committed any crime . Had he and Chuang not been involved, it would still have been reasonable for him to have given her a reference.

I drove up Signal Hill to get the foreground for this when I saw the clouds

Wow, great shot! That turbulent altocumulus is one of my very favourite formations. We get it sometimes here in NorWest weather.

    And really great stuff, everybody.

    A demonstration of channel splitting:

    top: colour original
    middle: converted to greyscale
bottom: colour image split to RGB, this is the red channel.

You can see how a colour separation can be much more contrasty and striking than greyscale.
