  • Hard News: Rape and unreason,

Dylan you seem like a Cool Dude
I don't know you well, but your post about the jury trial had me like YAY awesome person, fight the good fight for what is fair and just

but have you considered that your perspective is a little skewed

genetically you are stronger than the opposite sex
so if a woman tried to overpower you, you probably could stop that

Now genetically i am not stronger than the opposite sex
So if a man tried to overpower me, i could probably not stop that

now yes BROAD general strokes here
but those broad general strokes is why we teach our girls and young women how to be safe, how to protect themselves
and we hope like hell that's enough

and then we can talk about stuff and minutate
    but first
    FIRST we choose safety
then we get into changing the world for a better place.

    but FIRST IS SAFETY
    even if safety is flawed
safety is a whole lot better than nothing

  • Hard News: Rape and unreason,

maybe a different context is needed

Do parents teach their kids to beware of strangers ?
    stranger danger
don't get in a car with a stranger
don't talk to strangers on the way home from school...
some parents drive their kids or walk their kids to and from school to be extra safe

Does this mean all strangers are dangerous?
    No
But we teach kids that to protect them and try to keep them safe
even then it doesn't stop horrible things happening to some kids

so we teach our girls as they grow up to beware of things men might do to them
Does this mean all men are dangerous
    No
if teaching one girl to walk home from the uni library at night with a buddy
or teaching one girl how to walk with keys in her hands for a stab and run
means one less girl gets attacked
    We do it

    But guess what
girls and women still get attacked
    in our houses
    at our places of work

    So teach your kids this
    respect
teach them to grow up and be good and compassionate men and women.
but also teach them how to be safe
and explain why you need to do this, so that they grow up to be compassion adults with understanding.

  • Hard News: Rape and unreason,

    REALLY?
    risk reduction and feelings?

    REALLY?

why is this even a conversation? and i'm really sorry you were made feel a threat to women.

Try growing up being taught how to protect yourself from being attacked. Try seeing how that feels. That it's normal that you walk with the keys in your hand a certain way. that you don't go to X place just in case, that you walk with your head down just in case, that you do EVERYTHING possible to reduce risk and yet you still get assaulted

  • Up Front: Good Counsel,

    Judith
thank you so very much for sharing your story.

this whole thing just destroys my brain a little. I can truly say without both medication and therapy i wouldn't be able to even leave the house., or even attempt to do the teeny tiny amounts of work i do. And i'm the lucky one because i share a house with my mum and when i feel i need to check in with my therapist, she pays for it

  • Hard News: Community standards,

the tumblr problem sounds just like the flickr problem, once flickr became a yahoo thingy. Because yahoo operates under multiple jurisdictions the rules for say geman flickr users are different from american and terms of service for all users changed and oh wow what a mess.

i feel extremely sorry for all the community managers who get to sort this fun out

  • Hard News: Who else forgot to get married?,

i always like Miss as opposed to Ms, possibly because at my college to be anything other than Ms was letting all women down. 90% of the teachers were Ms, except the head of the science department who was a Miss and she got really shirty when other teachers called her Ms.

I really respected her for being what she wanted not what a 'right on' girls college expected of all women and of the students.

Which is also why i get somewhat grumpy with the whole discussion around changing your last name. I have had very dear friends been asked why did they change their name, as it's all a bit old fashioned. But to them and me it should be none of anyone's business why or if you changed your name, just as it should not be anyones business why or if you didn't change your name.

It all sits on the same continuum as some women thinking they have the right to decide if another woman is feminist enough.
