  • Hard News: There's a lot of it about,

If anyone thinks it's not as bad, just say so.

FWIW: And in saying that, I didn't mean that I thought the two were as bad as eachother.

  • Hard News: "Rubbish" is putting it politely,

This remix makes the new Kanye West song sound a bit less sucky.

nice pic, but shame about the download...

The file you were looking for could not be found, sorry for any inconvenience.

Possible causes of this error could be:

    * The file expired because it was not downloaded for 60 days

    * The file was deleted by its owner

    * The file was deleted by zSHARE because it didn't comply with our Terms of Use

    * Our server turned evil and is now rebelling against us (not likely)

I've probably gotta get out of bed earlier.

Nonsense? 'Hmmm' means I'm just musing, and '??' means I'm posing a question. If anyone thinks it's not as bad, just say so.

I doubt it took that much time to look up the records

Possibly. Would it be better if I'd said "is that as bad as 'researchers' in the PM's dept spending some/any time..."? My point (again, badly made, obviously) was that I don't think my tax dollars should be used by any party to dig dirt on another. Now, if they were looking the info up during their lunch breaks, that's the SOP of the kiwi workplace, and more acceptable.

They've simply been holding it to drop when the privileges committee report came back.

Well that's a bit sneaky, and therefore can't be true.

You'd be on safer ground complaining about that.

As I said, more of a 'musing' than a 'complaint'.
    ; )

  • Hard News: There's a lot of it about,

Are you REALLY thanking shadowy people with an agenda paying private investigators to go through someones's dirty linen until they finally find a blue dress with a stain on it?

Hmmm, is that as bad as 'researchers' in the PM's dept spending a lot of time going thru Key's share dealings of the last 5+ years?? Which brings me to...

Nat guy "Hey, John. What are we going to do when they find out about the Tranz Rail shares?'
JK "Ermmm, ah well I er didn't make on them, errrmmm I er actually lost money"
Nat Guy "Yeah but your trust made a packet"
    etc etc

You don't know much about Trusts do you? [deletes long answer and starts again:] If Key buys 1000 AirNZ shares at $2 and then another 1000 Air NZ shares under his family trust at $1 and then realises he can't criticize Air NZ in Parliament so tells his broker to sell them, which he does, at $1.50 a share .... well, he's hardly 'made a packet' has he?

Let me go further, with my own story:
I have bought stocks that subsequently dropped significantly in value. Because I believe in the stock and want to 'equalise' my losses I may choose to buy more stock. It's similar to 'doubling down' when gambling. Key says that's what he did with TranzRail, and I believe it. Whether part of the portfolio was in his name or his Family Trusts name is immaterial. (I've got a similar split amongst 'personal' and 'trust' holdings).
I once held a large parcel of shares in an Index stock, after selling a house. I was mortified when the Annual Report was released and there was my name at the bottom of the list of Top 25 shareholders. I quickly sold half so that my name would not appear on any more lists. Why? Because people are funny, Cullen is not alone with his 'Rich Prick' view of the world. I really do think Key fudged/lied/deceived/whatever on how many shares he had because he probably thought 'What's that got to do with you?"

No doubt many of you will have an opinion on that last bit!
NB - even Cullen admitted there was no Inside Trading going on.

The usual suspects are going apeshit, but I think Sharples has terribly over-egged this ....... His complaint about his conversation with Horomia is now down to an observation that it "didn't feel right". If this is "dirty tricks" I'm at a loss ....

Ah, but we're not talking about Tranz Rail shares anymore are we?

Meanwhile, Mr Pull-Your-Socks-Up-New-Zealand takes a hit

Couldn't have happened to a nicer 'tycoon'. And while that term is more reminiscent of Monopoly than anything else, it is likely appropriate in the context of Russian crony-capitalism.

Yes. And if I was a Hollywood Scriptwriter I'd be imagining all sorts of scenarios: Jennings in an opulent boardroom being made an offer he couldn't refuse by a large bald Russian stroking a cat. "Russia is for the Russians, Mr Jennings. But good luck in Africa..."

  • Up Front: What Sixteen Is,

Lost track of Table after his mother died so my mother stopped running into her in the supermarket.

You'd hope so. Otherwise it would have been kinda spooky.

  • Up Front: What Sixteen Is,

The fact that I made it out at all was a very delicate balancing act and owed a lot to sheer luck.

Yeah, that's what being a kid is all about. As a kid we think bungy jumping is a great idea, as a parent we think the cord will snap or there's a hitherto unseen rock just below the surface ...
[it's a metaphor - spare me your bungy stories!]

But I'm not sure what 'let kids be kids' means with reference to sixteen year olds.

Yeah, by 16 it's pretty much over (for parental control) but .... but ... I'm split on this subject. We all did (or know ppl who did) crazy things as Teens, but there's (seemingly) plenty out there now making bad choices. Do we just shrug it off, and hope they'll grow out of it?

    @Emma - I wasn't suggesting/thinking you would do P; I was just positing an updated scenario.

  • Up Front: What Sixteen Is,

Good on you for getting through it, but is (your story) not also a good reason to let kids be kids and not grow up too fast? At 16 I was trying to get laid, whereas at 16 you were .... riding on the backs of motorbikes and living with leather clad 'sweethearts' - which was okay cos Mum knew where you were and you were still going to school.

I think we all forget what we got up to as Teens and your story reminds us that despite our (stupidity/derring do?) we tend to survive. [Albeit that your story is at the extreme end of the scale]

But, at the risk of raking the coals ('I smoked dope when I was kid too, but what we had then wasn't as strong as what these kids are on') how would your story have finished in today's P fueled world? He could have just as easily pulled the trigger because he was tired of holding the cross-bow, as put it down.

And according to the article, Hillary Clinton is a Man U supporter. Can I just say, surprised not.

A Man U supporter? C'mon, that's right up theRE with "Ich Bin Ein Berliner".
