Oh and the great news is we got on the right side of the ratio 4 weeks ago. If at first you don't succeed, try a different position to keep things interesting.

Was it FotC who said "life is a shitfight"?
Having had to make some frankly horrible decisions after being on the wrong end of the 1:400 ratio of early-30s gestation, I speak from experience. I can't see anywhere that Morgan is saying "you selfish wimmin need to have babies earlier".
Fact is, having a baby later (for both sexes) increases issues. Are we allowed to discuss this or is it banned?
But: I can't see how it relates to the "40 year old first time parents", other than a convenient segue.

Ian, to clarify: I have friends that I love and respect, who have wonderful children that they happen to smack (usually in direct response to an incident).
Personally, I abhor smacking in all cases. Perhaps this is because my son is naturally well behaved (I prefer to think we raised him well). Or my wife was never smacked. Perhaps I would have smacked if the time and place were different Who knows?
Hence my conflict. I don't want my friends prosecuted (which they won't be unless they smack for "correction" under current law). BUT, I'd prefer if the law banned physical force against children altogether, just like adult assault.
In my experience, conflict over parenting choices is a surefire way to well and truly screw up a friendship.
-
I'm conflicted. The discussions I've had with friends have actually changed my opinion a bit. No matter how much I disagree with their parenting choices, I support the law as it stands allowing for instantaneous physical force for to intervene (more detail here)
But I do not want a law that allows for premeditated physical force, which is what Baldock thinks he has a mandate for.

On the Apple thing: the FCC has just issued an entirely awesome "please explain" letter to Apple, AT&T and Google. This is regarding Apple's rejection of the Google Voice app.
I'm pretty sure the answers will never be made public, but I so wish they would. The FCC is basically asking Apple to explain the arbitrary nature of how they review and reject applications.
My guess: 50 minimum-wage slaves scanning every application for nudity and swearing, and 1 guy looking for stuff that Apple can rip off and sell themselves.

A whole page of links to (mostly) low-traffic sites would pretty much nuke our Google ranking
If true, that's really interesting. I had no idea that outbound links counted against one's pagerank. I thought nofollow was just to stop spam commenters from
gaining any of your Google juice. -
Ugh, just Karl, although "the Karl" is probably more correct nomenclature.
And @nzben, while we're doing that.

Ditto - flag the threading. I'm a proponent of complete RSS feeds, but then again as a budding online publisher, I can see the attraction of partial feeds.
Just looked at Analytics for Wednesday: 20,000 page impressions!
Did I mention that when you linked to me regarding the Karl and the painted ladies, I got more hits than NBR, Computerworld, and NZHerald Technology combined?
Also, those forum stats: interesting that Geekzone was missing. Piles of lurkers?

I don't know if I'm going soft in my old age, but I vigourously agree on the Auckland driver suckitude. When someone blasts past me or runs an orange light, I have to think to myself "well, his wife must be in labour I guess". It's the only way to keep oneself sane.
And go Matipo School! When we were investigating schools to move near to, I almost cried three times over Matipo: once when seeing that they have a modern, regularly updated website; once when viewing their brilliant ERO report; and finally when walking into their tree and sculpture lined grounds.
Public education: fuck yeah!

Good to see they're starting to fix the site up.
