  • Speaker: Why churches should marry…, in reply to GarethD,

With regards point 1: Didn’t Jesus heal the gay centurion’s lover? Matthew 8:5-13 and Luke 7:1-10

I just had a gink at these two.

Servant is mentioned. For all my years I have never heard the word servant being used as a term for a gay person. Have I missed something?

Always impressed what folk can manage to glean from the bible.

    This religious fanatic needs help.

  • Up Front: Adric and the Art of Asking,

I'm always stunned to find out what can live alongside the brain inside that small skull and we can seem to carry one for quite sometime before a diagnosis eventually exposes the enemy within. Hang in there, the magic neutron, beta and alpha bullets have got pretty good odds attached to them that I would accept as well! Anyway, I want a few more books signed!!!!!

  • Access: Phillip Hughes: a personal reflection,

Shane Abbott's grief: I suffered intensely the effects of a sudden death of a team member when I was the manager of the team.

There are two unfinished two word sentences that haunt you night and day, week after week and on for an awful number of years.

    What if.....?

    If only.....

  • Hard News: Housing, hope and ideology,

Auckland is going to be too big. Even if the urban boundaries are expanded it will still mean no public transport plan and more cars. It is so bloody central as well. One day we are going to realise decentralisation has advantages.

it is crazy having a 400m isthmus splitting the place into north and south. There are no options of where one can spread out.

I seriously think that other "mega cities" need to be created in other parts of the country. Even on the south of the Bombays would be useful.

Power is south, space is south, food is south.......

  • Hard News: Housing, hope and ideology,

    German Housing Policy....

Although conventional wisdom in the English-speaking world holds that bureaucratic intervention in prices makes for subpar outcomes, the fact is that the German economy is by any standards one of the world’s most successful. Just how successful is apparent in, for instance, international trade. At $238 billion in 2012, Germany’s current account surplus was the world’s largest. On a per-capita basis it was nearly 15 times China’s and was achieved while German workers were paid some of the world’s highest wages. Meanwhile German GDP growth has been among the highest of major economies in the last ten years and unemployment has been among the lowest.

  • Hard News: Friday Music: An accompanied korero,

This 1970 clip of Lilburn ”demonstrating the sounds produced for a modern dance performance that include the electronic reconstitution of the sounds of the extinct huia bird” is wonderful. In this part of his career he was our BBC Radiophonic Workshop, in a way:

The acoustics section at DSIR in Lower Hutt was a fun place to play. Good tapes, good razor blades, I cut my teeth there playing silly games with reversed tapes, reverb and copying copious music off LPs for mates.

Spent a winter at Scott Base and DJd every friday night with my wierd selection of anything that included Goons and Python, Very Unamerican. At Midwinter there was an airdrop with the latest top toons of the previous 4 months included. I REALLY had fun creating a needle scratch loop and then playing all this new music and deciding 10 or 20 or 30 seconds in to hit the loop and move to the next. Absolute mayhem ensued within a few minutes as the station manager powered down to corrider to rescue the new music. Apoplectic he was and it took a bit to get back into the place next week!!

Extra bit. The Falklands were on that year and in the mornings the DJ on deck would spend half an hour reading the latest noos off the Telex from the Armed Forces Radio Network. The noos got round to how the Brits were doing against the Argies. Pretty good if you were on "our" side apparently. So at the end I rang up and asked if I could have a request. "Shuuurre Rarss, whaart would you laark?" "Could you play "Don't cry for me Argentina please." Deathly silence came over the airwaves. "Ummm....I think I will leave that off thanks Rarss". Within 5 minutes the OIC of McMurdo had grabbed the station manager and shot down to the station and went through the music collection and removed all 19 versions of "Don't cry for me Argentina". It were grand.
