  • Southerly: Late for What?,

My older son's preschool class had four Connors, one of them a girl.
    the younger one's class had a girl-Taylor and a boy-Taylor.

I personally wasn't that impressed with Jeremy as a name at school, but I've come to appreciate the balance between rarity and recogniseability - there's rarely more than one or two other Jeremy's around any school or workplace I've been in, but its not different enough to elicit comment about its oddness.

OTOH, if I had a buck every time someone has asked me "is that with a J or a G?" I'd ... still have spent it all by now.

Scott, all those hazard classes are for the undiluted substance in quantity.
As another example, close to my (and other folks here) heart: Alcohol:
    R11 R20 R21 R22 R36 R37 R38 R40
    R11 Highly flammable.
    R20 Harmful by inhalation.
R21 Harmful in contact with skin.
    R22 Harmful if swallowed.
    R36 Irritating to eyes.
    R37 Irritating to respiratory system.
    R38 Irritating to skin.
R40 Limited evidence of a carcinogenic effect.

    Harmful if swallowed! ROFL!

A little arsenic was one favoured cure all of the past. Quite natural.

Yup, it cured Phar Lap real good.

I'd have asked where the homeopathic treatments for diabetes were

Many of the arguments against miracles at this site apply to homeopathy and related 'natural' remedies.

I caught a bit of Penn & Teller's Bullshit last night, railing agaist hypnotherapy. They froth at the mouth a bit, but are always entertaining and a lot more accurate than the ones they're calling bullshit on.

(I thought about joining the Sceptics Society, but I figured that's probably just what they want me to do.)

Ben, I think there would be a market for a car that hadn't been developed properly but looked cool and went really fast.

Indeed, many of the popular facets of religion seem to me to be outsourcing personal responsibility to an invisible 'higher power'. One of the prime assumptions of many louder religious types is that lack of religion = lack of ethics/morals/responsibility.

Problem being that when Vista crashes, it doesn't take out the family of four in the oncoming lane.

There are many things that happen in the hospital system, they happen in the hospital system because that's the place for them to happen. I can't imagine it being well received if the hospitals started selling tickets to various interesting procedures. I imagine one could pretty much cover the cost of separating conjoined twins if you sold a few dozen front row seats. There are many aspects of Reality TV that mark a return to the golden age of the freak show.

Anjum, I know that also there's a huge can of worms around determining when exactly someone is braindead beyond the hope of recovery. I wouldn't want to be the one drawing the line in some of the iffier coma cases. That's where families informed consent is vital, but their consent should be limited to deciding whether the person is gone or not, they shouldn't be overriding the deceased wishes.
The problem is, once someone has been declared dead (or dead enough), then the wishes of the living overrule the wishes of the dead as they can't argue, and as time is generally of the essence, legal challenges aren't useful.

no lifestyle changes, so the screw the new one up, too

Yeah, but for every George Best there's a Jonah Lomu (I know, his donor is still kicking...but still).
