  • Hard News: The new establishment, in reply to Bart Janssen,

It’s interesting to see the places where they are and where they aren’t (in particular some supermarkets do and some don’t).

Countdown Ponsonby is great. Countdown Richmond Road is still bloody hopeless.

I had to work and missed the big-screen premiere of Simon's film on Friday afternoon, but I'm very happy about my Builders-at-Golden-Dawn evening out that night.

Lots of odds and ends early on (including a version of WH Auden's 'Death of a Fascist') and then, with the band, what seemed like quite a few CONCH3 songs, which were really funky. I spent most of the gig on an old-man stool at the bar down the front, having a wonderful time. Personal highlight: a prowling 'Inquest'.

I was obliged early on to note to two separate sets of dudes that it was rude to stand three metres from the stage and loudly talk over the music. It worked, but don't make me be the fiftysomething-guy police, people. No one cares how long it takes you to get to Raglan.

A word also for Wynyard quarter: it's a brilliant place to bike to. At most destination, still, you're hunting around for a place to lock your wheels to. At Wynyard, there are proper cycle stands everywhere.

Duh. I left one thing out of my listening practices – my computer speakers.

I bought the basic Bose Companion 2 multimedia speakers several years ago and it was $200 very well spent. I’d recommend them to anyone. They're what I hear most music first on.

  • Hard News: Metiria's Problem, in reply to Alastair Thompson,

As for Gower. Seems to me it is his natural tendency towards moral certitude for the sake of heaflines that often sets the pitchfork battalions marching.

The Left can't really complain about it this time though. He's bowled over by Jacinda and praised Metiria. If anything it's the certitude of the gallery, which is basically governed by where it smells blood.

  • Hard News: Metiria's Problem, in reply to Neil,

I don’t think I can go along with the youthful indiscretion line.

She was an adult, a parent and was studying law. She deliberately set out to circumvent our electoral system to advantage a party she was standing for.

To be fair, she did so at the expense of voting for herself in the adjacent electorate where she was standing for the same party.

  • Hard News: Metiria's Problem, in reply to Mikaere Curtis,

I get that Jacinda had to get into damage control mode around this, fair enough. If she can do that, then she can (after a reasonable amount of time in government), declare that Metiria has done enough time in back-benching penance and allow her into Cabinet in the same way that disgraced Ministers Nick Smith and Judith Collins have been.

I really hope that's the case.

  • Hard News: Metiria's Problem, in reply to mark taslov,

Well you’re the one who brought Māori up, and you’re the one claiming surety about what Māori greatly appreciate. I can only walk you so far with that.

Sorry, I misunderstood your reference to a “Pakeha morality play”. And my point was precisely that a range of views have been expressed by Māori. I took in what Kiri Allan said at the time, when it certainly wasn’t the perspective du jour. Even though I didn’t entirely agree with it.

  • Hard News: Metiria's Problem,

    Interesting column by Patrick Gower.

His angle is that Metiria took one for the team – that is, ruled herself out to deprive National of the campaign ammunition.
