  • Hard News: Dirty Politics, in reply to Katharine Moody,

Given the performance stats that No Right Turn plunders from time to time, it wouldn’t be surprising if certain ministerial offices were causing more than a reasonable number of requests to get lost at sea. Hopefully the Ombudsman decides to keel haul someone, get them the priority they should have.

Given a combination of IP(s) from posts and his claims to be a member of our friendly auckland media elite, it wouldn't be too hard to pin down who exactly it is. Although OGH's comments about going back to sports commentary imply he probably already knows.

I suspect the most effective way of dealing with a troll’s persistence is literally to ignore him. He will eventually literally go away.

Pertinent discussion at making light on just this subject – the first few comments are worth reading – based on some recently published research into the effects of different treatments of trolls in online forums.

Headline findings (from the washington post summary)

    (1) People who write low quality posts are more likely to write again when they get negative attention. Furthermore, the quality of their posts deteriorates. This goes beyond the simple adage that you shouldn’t feed the trolls by giving them attention. The evidence suggests that negative feedback can perhaps actually create trolls. It also suggests that people getting negative feedback are more likely to give others negative feedback, too, spreading the infection.

    (2) People who write high quality posts are encouraged by positive attention to write more. However, they aren’t as encouraged by positive attention as bad posters are by negative attention. Furthermore, the quality of their posts does not go up. Broadly speaking, encouragement doesn’t seem particularly effective.

The focus was on upvote/downvote based forums for the research, though the making light discussion goes more into what might be effective alternatives for the modern commenter.

The most important aspect of any potential priminister is well known to be his or her competence at the wearing of common business attire.

I have not seen you address the crucial question of why you believe Key is a more accomplished dresser than Cunliffe, when clearly this is the major driver of most New Zealanders political thinking. At the end of the day, you haven’t even come clean on whether maternal assistance pertains.

Frankly, I have to wonder if your refusal to address the sartorial elements of the campaign is due entirely to your inability to make a rational argument for Keys wardrobe mastery. You keep bringing up other elements of the campaign which everyone knows are not really important compared to this, so obviously you are just trying to avoid a point you know you can’t argue with.

    Hey!
    That’s my shtick…

Ya just gotta watch out for
    those Factitious characters, though…

I promise my intent wasn’t to be fractious (although maybe a little factious), and we’re all aware that your shtick is 24 carrot.

Sorry, I think I've been reacting badly to the influx of apparently bad actors in what had seemed a safe place. Apologies for my part in the troll baiting.

On the upside, we've seen an influx of interesting new people in the chch as well as the dirty politics threads.

And I called him a sock puppet, but that's because Jeremy Botham is his real...Sam Bryant is his real...Jake Starrow is his real name.

But guys, remember, it’s just that JaJerSamAdam espouses such edgy original and controversial opinions. Like, “That John Key, he seems nice,” and “Man, feminists, so humourless, amiright?”

Careful – if you’re too mean he’ll slip back into aposiopesic fits of apoplexy, and then his barrage of posts will take even longer to scroll past.

An Italian Marxist abusing a 4th generation Kiwi? That resonates about as loudly as Kim Schmidt pleading to be take seriously. I might ask Snowden if he can help me check your papers.

This isn't the first time it's come up - there seems to be a growing trend of petty nationalism (and racism, and sexism) across the majority of western democracies, at least since the GFC, and in direct reversal of what had seemed to be a trend away from nationalism in the decade prior. It's an interesting and depressing trend.

In fact he got treated in the exact same way has Key has treated Hager and Greenwald.

On a related note, the inimitable Mr Tiso commented on Key's transitory "nice guy" sheen in the preface to his post this week.
