Anyone who tells you that Australia is miraculously untouched by recession is being highly selective about where they direct the rose-hued Ray-Bans.
No untouched, but not terribly badly affected in truth. Modelling I've seen suggests skill shortages are fast upon Australia and you can bet that employers will be actively recruiting from NZ. Still, perhaps this is for another thread.

I'm glad. And glad too to hear that David's family is OK. Woke up this morning and thought how lucky I was to be waking up in a comfortable bed after a good night's sleep - unlike some of those poor souls waiting, possibly injured, definitely frightened and shocked, for rescue.
Jacki, you've captured my thoughts too, thank you.

That's a truly horrible prospect.

Wandering around disaster zones with TV crews seems to me to be less than helpful
Simon, that'd be a distraction I agree, but Bligh limited herself to providing regular media updates away from the recovery effort and ensured there was consistent and informed information to residents as well as to interested others.
I do think the PM ought to be there if only to make sure any necessary administrative decisions are quickly expedited.

I think there's a legit role for politicians, Qld's Premier Bligh did a great job through the recent flooding. It's not a celeb job, it's a leadership role and though I don't much like Key, the PM should be playing a role (I figure Goff just happened to be there).
