  • Up Front: Floodland,

For once, a Chch disaster I’m on the *outside* of. Isabel, my heart goes out to you and all others affected. Thanks for writing this.

I was shocked to see my familiar stretches of the Heathcote river through Opawa and Woolston made unrecognisable, the river at one with the streets and footpaths and gardens surrounding.

The council has been dredging along here a lot since the quakes. They’ve removed more weed than you could possibly imagine (the water has been, shall we say, nutrient-rich ) but I don’t know how the profile of the riverbed has been affected by liquefaction and uplift. As we know, liquefaction silt sets hard and is virtually waterproof.

I remember when I was a kid, before the Woolston Cut was put in, every year or two there’d be flooding on Clarendon and Richardson Terraces. The Cut helped the river to flow faster, but I wonder if changes to the bed of the Estuary may have nullified those gains. Perhaps both rivers are now draining more slowly?

It’s clear that the damage caused by the earthquakes is so much bigger and more complicated than we thought. Poor bloody Christchurch.

  • Notes & Queries: Little CD in a Prospect…, in reply to Kyle MacDonald,

Is it bullying to criticise what someone writes? I understand that a large number of people independently saying critical things can be hurtful, but I don't see how we can avoid it.

My understanding of opinion columns is they are intended to be provoking.

Are we supposed to ignore the words of people with mental health or other issues?

WO's whole schtick is to be as offensive and stirring as possible. Do we have to be OK with that?

    I'm genuinely foxed here.

I didn't mean to make things worse. That column made me really angry and I don't think it should have been published.

Totally agree with Bart that we need to have more conversations on this subject.

As far as I'm concerned DHC and her armchair psychologising can fuck right off. How dare she be so patronising? It's just more bullying.

Thanks for bringing CD to life for us David. I'm sorry for your loss.

  • Capture: Two Tales of a City, in reply to Rob Stowell,

Hope Dunedin is good for you. Lilith. Lovely city. Nice of you to move there and help them pay for their stadium :)

Heh. Thanks Rob, and Hebe. My best wishes for you both. And for dear old Chch.

  • Capture: Two Tales of a City,

The central city “precincts” always were a a dumb, half-baked idea. And surprise, surprise, businesses are setting up wherever the hell they like. Law firms don’t need the “justice precinct”: most of their business isn’t court work anyway .

As for the stadium which apparently we’re committed to: ask anyone from Dunedin about their covered stadium. Last year the people of Dunedin subsidised 93% of its rates. What a winner.

Library users are missing Central Library Tuam, which has been demolished for the “justice precinct”, and replaced with the tiny, inadequate Central Library Manchester. And our Bus Exchange is being moved further from the centre so there aren’t so many ugly buses cluttering up the CBD. How will people get into and around the CBD? Who knows.

I’m so tired of being upset by all these things, by the lack of democracy and rationality in planning. I’m moving to Dunedin. I hope to be able to think of other things.

  • Capture: Coast to Coast, in reply to Hebe,

Wish me luck you inspiring Capturers: I’m photographing my niece’s wedding this afternoon; nervous much. The first time I have done anything like this (and the request came as a direct result of playing around on Capture).

Go for it Hebe! Hope it goes really well.

  • Hard News: The Cycle Frolic, in reply to Sacha,

Auckland Council (which covers city and regional level functions) can say they want something done, but they are over-ridden (by design) by whatever the government wants.

Huh. Supercity! Remind me why that was a good idea?
