  • Southerly: How I Became a Grumpy Old…,

David, it’s so lovely to hear from you! Can I say the bits I can see in the photos look AMAZING!

My Dad built our family home, over many years while working fulltime and while Mum was raising a tribe of kids.

As a builder he was self-taught, and every nook and cranny of that house was immaculately crafted and a joy to look at; we learned not to notice the bits he hadn’t done yet.

My sister tells the story of him finishing a built-in bookcase and finding it was slightly out of square. He smashed it apart in silent rage, then carefully put it together exactly right.

I understand your dedication, and applaud you.

fresh elderflower water. Less – or no – sugar and just as fragrant. Pick half a dozen or so heads of elderflower in the morning, put in large jug with a litre of just-boiled water and some maple syrup or raw honey (or not – doesn’t need sweetening) and lemon or lime juice. Cover and leave to sit on the bench covered for an hour or two, then add ice and enough cold water to make 2 litres. Keep in the fridge and drink undiluted.

    Wow, that sounds GREAT!

there is basically no cost when volunteers are involved.

Also, professional firefighters have a lot of time between callouts, since fires happen at unpredictable intervals. It's great that they can assist with other emergencies.

the CTV site is less than 10 minutes’ walk to the Central Fire Station. That is even longer than I thought it would have taken – and I’m implying no fault whatsoever on the Fire Service’s part. That is how it was that day all over the city.

A man died in City Mall, barely 3 blocks from the Hospital, who might have been saved if he could have been got there. So much going on, so many difficulties, a limited number of emergency service personnel.

Grapefruit has been contraindicated for at least 3 different medications I’ve been on.

Yeah, it's strong stuff. Interferes with hormonal contraceptives.

  • Hard News: Republished: The CTV collapse…, in reply to Matthew Poole,

The failing of the senior officers was in seeing the command vacuum for what it was and establishing the necessary IMT structure. Doing it from scratch is not something they regularly do, or train for; they train to step into an orderly structure in an orderly way with an orderly hand-over from the existing incident controller. Knowing how to do that and run an incident, it turns out, doesn’t translate to being able to recognise a lack of order and then take the necessary steps to create that order.

    Interesting Matthew, thanks.

I’d try to just keep the top ring and replace the rest of the tin with a pouch (or pad out the inside of the tin, so that you don’t bruise the fruit. Older rellie in the family had a beaut contraption with a canvas pouch under a bespoke ring with teeth.

    That sounds great!
I’ll try some padding inside the tin.
Reckon it’s also important not to catapult the fruit over the neighbourhood once captured!
