Having spent 2 1/2 years living in the armpit of America (New Jersey) I can confirm that this is par for the course. Spending time at the Jersey Shore in summer is an experience not to be missed. Paying 8USD to sit on the beach and people watch puts what we have in NZ in perspective.

Where is the New Zealand internet heading this year? Your hopes? Your fears?
I really want to see some Auckland based web startups along the ines of PlanHQ, Xero, HireThings, etc. I think with the Auckland Web Meetup we are getting a great community happening and it will be good to see some cool new businesses launching.
Will your broadband get any better, really?
Hmm - Triple Play please. Mobile, Internet and Landline (damn faxes). $100/month - All you can eat.
And does "the New Zealand internet" matter anyway?
Yes it does - I'm all for Amazon and other great international companies but more and more I find myself getting local. Hopefully local business can wake up and start using the internet to promote themselves. Those that do will have a headstart on those that sit back and do nothing. The Yellow Pages is not the only directory that matters now.

(The problem with New Zealand's international bandwidth, he pointed out, is not a constraint on capacity -- it's a lack of competition, and the consequent pricing.)
Seems like he listened at KiwiFOO earlier this year then?

I ask that question all the time too, but even more I wonder "why would people ever share an email address?" - the idea of doing that just totally freaks me out.
We don't even share the same computer or login let alone an email address. I'm sorry but my desktop is my own domain and my girlfriend thinks exactly the same way I do.
To me the way I set things up in my digital life is part of who I am as sad as that may sound (I do actually get outside...)

"entrepreneurial" - sign of the devil. All it is going to take is one leftish writer to actually get of their arse, start a website of like minded people, sell ads on it and we are all ruined. I mean people actually making money from their ideas and their passion. Who would want kiwis to do _that_?
Now where did I leave that bit of fencing wire....

In other NZ video sharing site news there is also http://www.sealion.co.nz/. How did I find this site? Well it seems the best way to promote your site is with a sandwich board with a picture of sea lion on it out the front of your house!

Don't hold your breath over the John Cale concert - I was sorely disappointed in his 2002 concert at London's Festival Hall. I guess having the Boredoms warm up for him was a mistake in retrospect - they absolutely rocked the joint. Cale was actually so bad that we left the concert. Not pretty but maybe I will give him another chance.

Yes, possibly my ability to make a joke, or your ability to understand it. Probably the former.
Hmm, I didn't watch the whole thing and the part of brain which references 80's pop culture was temporarily switched off.
I'll be more careful next time ;-)
