  • Hard News: If wishing made it so ..., in reply to Greg Dawson,

I was a bit more observant than usual taking the bus home tonight. We had a couple more cashies than usual and because the door is so narrow it did hold up HOP users. So, the front bus doors do need to be wider. Plus, one person took what felt like ages getting her purse out once she was on the bus!

I get on in the city and go two stages so I see most of the passengers. At peak time there are not that many cash payers on each bus. Also, I always keep my card out, to avoid delays.

I look forward to that then. For what it's worth, all your points make sense Matthew. Even with Snapper I've noticed trips are much faster since while one cash passenger is being served a whole horde of Snappers just pile on. From a passenger point of view the journeys have become much more pleasant since there's less idling time and there's no waiting in a queue behind passengers with issues.

Now, if only I didn't have a 7 minute walk in the rain from the bus stop.

Um, not sure, I think it must be the hybrid. My card has both logos on it.

I use HOP and it's a big improvement on the old system but still slower than it should be. Plus, if the reader doesn't work properly a couple of times that slows things down more. You have to hold the card up to the reader just right...

  • Hard News: Moving from frustration to disgust,

My daughter's school has just cancelled the out of zone ballot for 2013. As for us, if we wanted to use an alternative school there is no other one within a child's walking distance taking out of zone. There is one small school without a zone nearby (short drive) but it struggles to build up its roll despite having a good reputation educationally. Probably "white flight" issue there. We are in Mt Eden. I don't consider that much of a choice. It's pretty tough to move house.

  • Hard News: Women and their representations,

I was wondering why they chose Lorraine Downs for the cover. Pity they couldn’t have featured one of the 10 influential women eh? Great topic for Media7.

This is so infuriating. My eldest is a new entrant and I've heard from the school about it's view of NS and the latest changes. The teachers are warning us of the potential problems, especially for kids with learning difficulties. I wish they could just get on with teaching.

  • Up Front: Sex with Parrots,

Re incest, I read recently about a High Court decision approving an application for a couple to marry who had previously been father and daughter-in-law (falls within list of prohibited marriages). The Court had required them to satisfy it that their conduct had not caused the end of each other's previous marriages!
