  • Hard News: An open thread while I'm down…, in reply to Hilary Stace,

His brother Mick (real name Denis) was the first Vice Chancellor of Waikato I think

Not VC but one of the leading advocates for Waikato's establishment, a little of the history is here. The first VC was Llewellen (sp).

Sorry for the non sequitur, but to save all of the PA community the bother, I can report this this interview with Peter Dunne is as vacuous as you'd imagine. What a total waste of space this man is. WTF do Ohariu Belmont voters think they're getting from this twit!

  • Field Theory: All Blacks v South Africa…, in reply to Steve Barnes,

Right. The US Dollar plummets like a stone as our Dollar rockets to all time highs and it is still worth nothing if you want to buy an All Blacks Jersey.
Yeah, right, pull the other one, no, not that one... this one...

What total bollocks, and presumably this is the pre-prepared answer.

    - Piri, showed up Jimmy C on passing speed and little kicks
    - SBW didn't do much

I though Cowan played really well, albeit differently from Weepu. Cowan's defence was brilliant and he runs the ball more than Weepu does/did but I agree Weepu always adds a lot when he comes on.

SBW did not have an impact, odd for him too; he didn't look like he was clear about his role. Certainly Nonu played one of his better games.

  • Field Theory: All Blacks v South Africa…, in reply to Hadyn Green,

Yeah, I didn't think there was a steal, there were at least two turnovers, one they overthrew, one was messed up by their lock...

Russell, I agree Messam runs high, I figure it's something he's doing deliberately to look to hand off but if he's held up, yeah, we can lose the ball. Thompson played well and it was good he got the start. I still see Read and Kaino as a starting 8 and 6, not sure who's the best back up.

Oh and earlier in the thread, praise for Hore; couldn't agree more strongly. He had a fantastic game but I'd not see him as vice captain, I figure that's Read or Carter?

Nelson's data are great. Another interesting stat is Messam's carries, 2nd overall with only 35 minutes on the park, and just ahead of Thompson. They've also got similar lineout stats. Tough call since I don't think both will be on the bench.

  • Hard News: How much speech does it take?, in reply to DCBCauchi,

As a publisher/issuer, I’m saying that that is not good enough. Actual principles underpin legal restrictions on our rights, and are the ultimate protection of those rights.

Then I reiterate my earlier point, if you want certainty and simplicity, you'll get the lowest common denominator standard.

but they are notoriously hard to define in universal terms. I happen to think that it's a good thing, that we don't have a test that forecloses any kind of argument a priori. If that makes me a question dodger, so be it, but that's my answer: we have criteria in law; they are tested by the courts; they are continuously updated as society and the media evolve.

There goes Giovanni again, saying what I meant but sadly failed to say...

I like this but it surely doesn't apply to speech? Your right to not be offended by me can be respected by choosing to not listen; it doesn't require my silence.

There are quite a few MPs at Westminster who want statutory regulation of newspapers now.

Gillard here has mooted regulation also.

There's a good podcast debate from the LSE on this very issue, I got it on iTunes so can't easily link to it but if you search the podcasts lists, it's easy to find and is only last week (I think).
