Field Theory: Four Years Ago, in reply to
the Waka crew crowding and assault and when they returned to the Waka they found they had been used as receptacles for discarded beer bottles and cigarette buts
I was really saddened to read this aspect of it all. Having felt like NZ culture/biculture was well and truly represented... what the hell to make of this? Kids and women abused by drunks, just not on, not ever.

Where's Jock Hobbs when you need him? Actually, I think I know the answer, he's unwell.

Sam Stosur deserves an extra medal for the quiet, unassuming and graceful way she accepted her trophy in the shadow of a giant. She even thanked her! I would have been proud to be an Australian yesterday. Hell, I was proud being related to some.
Australians (&, just to be clear, I'm not one) are enormously proud of her; she's a class act!

+1 nzlemming, both this and the earlier piece are really great reads. Another of the innumerable examples of why PA is one of my favourite places to hang.

Great story, thanks Sofie. Great to hear kiwis are still so hospitable, to South Africans even.

This just arrived in my email
Our players who art in black,
hallowed by thy game.
When full time comes,
thy will be done in 2011 as it was in '87.
Give us each game our daily victory
and forgive us our previous shortcomings as we forgive those who coached in '07.
And lead us NOT to knock out round failure, but deliver us from World Cup drought.
In the name of McCaw, Carter and the holy Webb Ellis,Amen.

Thanks George, I was being lazy and appreciate your sourcing the data.
I also agree with you comments re Australia, I agree there's some stereotypical traits which are often in evidence but I live in Petersham, richness for me means the Portuguese who've established a large community, nearby Marrickville there's many Greeks and Vietnamese... around the corner in Leichhardt where you can easily find yourself one of the few English language speakers in many cafes.

Same. It was a big thing realising I wasn’t from there, I was of the Pacific.
On a slightly different note, while still living in NZ, I attended a conference in Adelaide which include a session for “Island nations” which, when me and another kiwi attended, prompted considerable surprise amongst our Australian hosts.
Thanks Jackie. Wow that is a terrifying low level of immigration.
Yeah, and I’m guessing the gross in-flow is much higher but is offset by the floods of kiwis heading to Australia… I suspect this will get worse too; Qld’s recovery will compete with Christchurch for trade and related workers.

I didn't hear Patti Smith til 1988 at uni... bit younger than others round here
I do recall hearing that a Sex Pistols song was banned from NZ radio in the late '70s, guessing it would have been Anarchy, but I was fortunate to have an older brother either studying or working in radio at the time and he had the double LP...
ETA. On reflection, I might have seen the double LP later?

Meant to click the Dobbyn track but got Marion Bates; very happy accident, great track, the lyrics remind of the Muttonbirds type narrative which I bloody love (and seems endemic to NZ).
