  • OnPoint: On Freedom of Speech,

"whore" can be used as a very specific gendered insult for women with no actual reference to sexual promiscuity

Hmm.That word can be used for men too, and have heard it many times, in reference to their selling themselves/their ideas/principles for a buck. That's probably beside the point you're making, so apologies if that's so.

I was bemused when I asked an eight year-old to tell me which words in one of my stories she didn't know, she said "gay" - which I had used to describe high spirits.

    Thanks Rachel, that's great info.

Lots of people seem to have a head awash with words, which come out in torrents. Just usually in the wrong order, with no rhythm and range.

Excuse me, sir, I resemble that remark!

a Hard News fan from way back. He sent me a really nice email when its radio incarnation finished up.

It was through bFM that I first heard Hard News. I worked at National Radio, but always had the b on my car radio. I got to look forward to your weekly stint. Working from home now, I only get to listen to bFM when I'm driving, which is not all that often. I didn't realize that Hard News isn't on there any more. What a loss! (For them and for anyone else wanting their horizons broadened a tad, in what was often very funny but always enlightening listening.)

    Cats are ambivalent about you.

Of course - that's why I love them!

  • Hard News: Every scene needs its stars,

I put together this whole list of music, media and memories -- and the first comment is about the kitteh video I stuck in at the last moment.

    Ah, the internet.

    But Russell, I looooves cats!

So, if none of us watch the NZ cricket team, will that help?

    Absolutely.

So that's what my boy Hobbes gets up to when I'm not with him. Puts a collar on and plays drums! (See my gravatar for the fellow himself.)

    @Richard:

One person miles from where the action is taking place wimpering in the corner isn't going to affect the outcome.

Never heard of the butterfly effect?

Hooray! Someone else - it looks like quite a few actually - who feels that watching NZ play anybody will ruin the team's chances!

I stopped watching the Black Caps years ago for that very reason. Just couldn't stand the guilt.

  • OnPoint: On Freedom of Speech,

Keir: Just in case you were feeling I aimed my comment (re using "cunt" as an insult/description) at you - not so.

It was niggling at me as I read the whole thread: we use sex words to badmouth others (and I include myself in this - may have started out good little pure Miss D, but time has worked some changes:)) so yes, apart from the unfortunates pointed out by Mr Wylie, arsehole owners are pretty universal, so my vote is that the man-of-the-moment-which-seems-to-have-gone-on-forever is definitely one of those!
