  • Hard News: Veitch,

    Rampant speculation follows...

How about a moratorium on this sort of blather? Human beings have complex minds which cannot be reduced to a few uninformed platitudes; we none of us know the subject of this speculation and we are not psychiatrists. Besides, it is distasteful.

  • Hard News: Veitch,

We should not be cynical about this. If someone appears to have attempted suicide, we should assume that his intention was genuine.

Sorry Evan, put you crook: I meant to write 648 NOT 698. I counted ONE word more than their count of 647

Clearly, if you make this kind of error in your own post, the accountants have good reason to keep an eye on you.

  • Hard News: Of Monsters and Old Boys,

Three generations of the males in my family were sent to board at Christs College, but it just seemed to make them incredibly miserable. Is it any better these days?

I should hope not. It is a fine old English tradition, to send your son to the school which you hated. It is character-building.

  • Hard News: Veitch,

I have always understood the best defence against action for defamation to be having the money to pay for expensive lawyers. It is not an area of the Law which is predicated on fairness.

  • Hard News: Veitch,

Already Susan Devoy has come out to say she was misled about giving her character reference.

Isn't that Contempt of Court, or even Perjury?

  • Hard News: Veitch,

On Checkpoint, Mary Wilson spoke to Stuart Grieve QC, Veitch's lawyer. He spoke of his side's thwarted desire for a defended trial, saying that they wanted a "rumble" and that there would have been "blood on the carpet."

Given the nature of his client's offence, his choice of language was at best insensitive. At worst, one wonders whether Grieve is as much a thug as Veitch.
