  • Southerly: Refugee Status,

Well, the story of Albert the Otter was quite heart warming but my naive mind did not detect the promised erotica.

Sorry for the false advertising. The erotic subtext of that heartwarming children's tale was revealed via a series of close readings in the subsequent discussion thread.

    Russell started it.

Not forgetting the otter erotica, too.

  • Southerly: Refugee Status,

Sure, Orwell would have scribbled a brilliant essay under the doorframe while the house fell down around him, but his wife and child wouldn't have thanked him for it. Trust me on that.

But thank you for taking the time to write so coherently and beautifully when there is so much else going on. And I am so glad to hear you and Jen and dauntless Bob are basically unscathed. Now get down off the roof!

Dare I say, (as this could be, to some, a bit callous but truly not meant),it is only stuff that will be lost, it isn't your family and that is what really counts.

"People are more important than things" is our mantra, for everything from spilled milk up. Bob clearly understands this intuitively.

That said, your poor house, and poor things! The precious Christchurch snow globe you transported across the world at great expense is looking mightily poignant this week. I actually found myself stopping one of the boys from giving it a shake -- some weird over-anxious subterranean magical voodoo thinking had me briefly convinced that I had discovered the real cause of all those aftershocks...

  • Up Front: Day Five,

this continuous jaw-grinding, nerve-wearing stress is likely how people with anxiety disorders feel all the time.

Yes -- a bit like having your own personal Alpine fault, plus a few dozen lateral ones you didn't know were there until they randomly act up. Exhausting. I cannot imagine a city full of people in such a state.

  • Up Front: Day Five,

So good to hear it from you straight, as it were. I hope it was as helpful to write this (and read the comments) as it is for us to read (and read the comments) - thank you for taking the time to post.

A burning need to do something to help is teamed with a total mental incapacity to work out what that would be.

Standing in line the morning of Sept 12 to donate blood (at 8 months pregnant I had several pints to spare; practically a whole armful), I was told that the best thing I could do was go home and look after myself and my impending family.

It didn't compute. I wanted to HELP. But it was the right thing to do; sure, in an ideal world I might have had something to offer, but at that very moment, nobody was better at looking after me and mine than, well, me.

And in your case, you've been looking after you, yours, and other people. If that's not helping I don't know what is.

Blimey, Joe. Any chance of getting the thing roped off? Alternatively, you might be able to get their attention with these pics of a seriously giant sinkhole.

  • Hard News: Little pieces of a big picture,

Lucy, thanks for that link to the UC page. Horrendous pics of the library. I am still wondering if that was the best earthquake protection a library could buy? Will Wellington library stacks do the same domino topple, in the event?

Also answers our questions earlier about the Logie collection, too :-(

"Emma or Russell will post something, any minute now."

No disrespect to Dr H, but I know him to be a) generally a night-owl and b) a sensitive plant who revises almost more obsessively than I do.

i.e. in the blog potato-sack race, if there is one, we are hobbling three-leggedly some way behind the pack, cradlng our bloggy eggs on tiny spoons.

I am still marvelling at having posted anything on the day, and very grateful for the gathered information and good cheer on that thread. And very much looking forward to posts from our Chch correspondents, once they get their heads together and have a spare moment.
