Agree with you totally on the napalm, there's no excuse for that stuff. A bit of nitro, or tnt however...

  • Hard News: Te Qaeda and the God Squad,

Making things that go boom is a time honoured tradition of chem students the world over. I know of a couple of successful pyrotechnicians who carried out a couple of pranks at uni that might well have got them kicked out (at the least) if it had been pinned on them. DIY plastique blowing out windows in the student village for example.

  • Hard News: Te Qaeda and the God Squad,

I would say that they are rather more designed for explosively propelling small, hard projectiles at incredibly high speed and accuracy.

The accuracy part may be debatable... but apart from marksmanship practice, what other intent can be inferred to the construction of a device designed to accurately propel a projectile at high speeds?
Speaking as someone who doesn't own and hasn't owned a gun, and whose shooting experience is limited to blasting a bunch of skeet with a shotgun and and decimating some balloons with a .22 (pedant alert: yes decimating, I only got about 1 in 10 of them).

  • Hard News: Te Qaeda and the God Squad,

No contradiction. Guns are made for killing, either people or animals. But if people want to kill, either themselves or others, they don't need a gun.
Bart, I agree, guns make a successful killing more likely, but the (self-)killers will still more than likely make the attempt. Yes, less will be successful, but the way those stats were presented implies that without guns, all those lives would be saved. Which is not accurate.

  • Hard News: Te Qaeda and the God Squad,

In a typical year 96 New Zealanders are shot to death: nearly two a week. Of these, 75% are suicides, 12% accidents, 11% homicides, while in 2% of cases the cause is undetermined

So none of those 75% who topped themselves would have died if they didn't have a gun available? Likewise, none of the 1 in 5 homicides committed with firearms would have happened without a gun?
Guns are a convenient method for killing, after all, its what they're made for. But it is disingenuous to imply that by controlling or eliminating firearms those deaths wouldn't happen.

Oh, for at least as long as "MILF" has :-)

Round our way the preferred term is yummy mummy. But a chunk of that demographic have seceded to become desperate housewives.

Since when has "soccer mum" been a part of our vernacular?

I know a lot of soccer mums, and they only ever use the term ironically.
And none of them, to my knowledge, finds anything at all compelling about Jude - except maybe feeling compelled to chuck her chemist shop junk mail in the recycling.

  • Cracker: Stoopid,

what makes good service great: connecting with people as individuals.

And there's the essence of it.
Treat people like real people and, oddly enough, they respond positively. The hard part is inspiring that in your staff. Its easy to say "treat people nice, smile, say have-a-nice-day", but if the staff aren't feeling it, or really good actors, it just comes across as fake plastic McDs service (which is still preferable to crap service).

The best service I ever had was from an optometrist, it was 12 years ago and I still tell this story, which tells you something.
For our wedding we had a stack of rellies in from overseas, the US & Bermuda mostly, and one of the aunties lost a screw from her glasses. No biggy, we were in town and passing a new optometrist that had opened recently. We popped in and asked how much for a replacement screw, the chap said no charge, and took her specs out back. While we waited, he also took the glasses from everyone else on our group of about 8, and ran them through the cleaner, tightened any loose bits and replaced the nose pieces on a couple of them.
He not only didn't charge for the service, he flat out refused a tip from any of us, and when the auntie tried to buy some lens cleaner as a way to give him money, he wouldn't sell it to her - said she's just as well off with soap & water. In the end they stuffed some money in the guide dog collection box on the counter.
Needless to say my wife and I have been to them for all our optical needs ever since, even after the place changed hands and the service went down to just averagely good.
I have no idea how much they made from word-of-mouth out of that, but it would have been well worth the 15 minutes and five bucks (if that) of parts.
