  • Cracker: A Good Week,

We're being beaten by the Takehe, which is like a rubbish version of the Pukeko - it can't even breed properly.

Giovani, do you agree that if just teh first 4 exchanges were printed Laws would come out like the dick?
It's the subsequent race around the gutter that does nobody any favours?

Giovanni, I'm not sure our beloved correspondent was ever aiming for satire. Seems like a regular bloke who wanted to put his view to a political figure - which he did with a pretty balanced mix of emotion and fact.
I don't think we can blame his eventual response when it so quickly descended into what Laws did there. Sure, a subtle riposte to make Monty Python proud would have been lovely but he never set out for that and I imagine ended up being pretty shocked and offended.

I don't think it's HIS standards of response that are really in question here

Latent fascism? I presume Mr Lhaws considers the latent part of that to be the insult, rather than the fascist. Given his poster-boy status for the latter.

  • Hard News: What the TiVo deal signifies,

while the TiVo on-demand programming is delivered via IP, it isn't internet content.

This is the main point to me - this isn't "walled garden internet content". It's paid-for TV programming that just happens to be delivered over IP technology.

Also, is interesting just how much control Hybrid have handed over to Telecom - that may explain the confusion around "locked into Telecom" as that's certainly a (false) message that benefits TCNZ but seems to hurt potential uptake for Hybrid.

the cost of buying in to the technology is closer to $1000 than, say $400.

Agreed, but Telecom would be fools to run with the one-off cost as the leader. $200 plus $30 a month for a couple of years can stack up nicely against the $100 and $65 a month ad infinitum of Sky+.
They may even get some normal-digital Sky subscribers shifting over to get PVR functionality at a lower monthly price (for those who just watch mainly free-to-air anyhoo)

  • Hard News: What the TiVo deal signifies,

Ms Minicola said she hoped other telcos would follow Telecom's lead and offer no-limits broadband deals that allowed movie downloads.

And then merrily send them over to a Telecom store or website to buy it? Methinks... unlikely.

  • Hard News: Where the crazy comes from,

Thanks Gareth, that makes a lot more sense

It still has flaws of course - limiting the scope of who can make full use of the advanced features for no apparent benefit? As Russell sad, surely Orcon and Vodahug would have done the same deal?
